...do you put into a 'typical' portrait shoot? Are you a careful planner who thinks out every pose and nuance beforehand, or do you prefer more of a spontaneous session?

Do you change your palnning style with different types of portraits (classic/fashion/boudoir) or do you tend to stick to the same types of plans (not poses) regardless of the style of portraiture?

Or does it depend more on the client than on they type of shoot you're doing?

Just curious how others do this. So far, I'm still in the "I have a few ideas, but let's keep it spontaneous" camp.

Well, it totally depends on the type of shoot, but for the most part I try to have a good game plan going into every shoot. Its good to be flexible of course, but careful planning can really pay off....

For example: If your shooting babies, have SEVERAL posing devices/places in mind cause you can't just lay baby on the floor etc. For a boudior shoot you might want to have some fabric veils or other props. For a model shoot you might do best to have a small set, tables, etc.

Today I checked the sunrise / sunset times for a week from Sunday because I wanted to be sure to know for a wedding I'm shooting that day.

So... plan and prepare! It can mean all the difference between having an okay shoot and having a great shoot.

Hanneke, I work for a Dutch company and its the 2nd I've worked with - I'm quite used to helping translate those odd or underused words. Happy to help :)

Anybody else want to take a stab at this?

(BTW - thanks Cindi!)

OK. Last bump.
I'm beginning to wonder if Cindi is the only person here with an opinion on this. If she is, well then I guess we need to declare a "Cindi Is the Best" day and have a party. At her house. :)

I like the approach Elsa Dorfman takes: spend hours talking to subject, then take two shots.

Very interesting approach.

That link is to a tut on photo.net and contains many many useful links.

Edit:
Now let's get to cindi's for margaritas!!!!

The portraits that I had more or less planned on my recent trip, I didn't really 'plan' anything besides going there and taking some pictures of people (my friend arranged meeting some people to shoot) and I think that that really hindered the quality of the portrats I got. It didn't help that we didn't much speak the same language, but I think if I ever get serious about shooting portraits I'll be doing quite a bit of setup/planning to get the shots that I want.

Edit:
Yah, I wan't one of them margaritas too!
