Learned quite a few things from //photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/index2.html#autofill this morning about Canon E-TTL. Possibly the most important thing is the reason to NOT use "focus and recompose" when using E-TTL flash. Quite a lot on that site that is very informative, and I've been struggling to make sense of the system. This helps, in case others are interested. |

So sorry; forgot to auto parse. I really don't know why that's an "option"; every other site I know of does it automatically and I think it should be a default here.

It's goofy... you can check the "parse URLs" box, and eventually, it inevitably gets reset to unchecked. Bizzarre.

Canon Digital SLRs are "Type A" bodies. You can use focus and recompose Type A bodies with Flash Exposure Lock. I know the 300D with 580EX allows this. (you can tell, becasuse when you half-press the shutter, the flash emits a "pre-flash" that is used for metering.)
On the other hand, focus and recompose does not lead to the sharpest possible images. |

And on the other hand... the center focus point is the most sensitive of any of the focus points, having both a horizontal and a vertical sensor in one (all other points are horizontal or vertical, but not both). Combine it with a 2.8 or faster lens and you get exceptional focusing accuracy off of the center focus point.
There are always trade-offs, huh? :-)
Someday we'll get a camera/lens combo that has the best of all worlds - in the mean time, we'll just keep spending money! |

There's the other tradeoff of cropping in PP :-)
"Someday" may be soon :-)
The 5D has three sensors with the H&V ability. But they are the center 3 focus points (the center and two of the hidden ones).
The 1D MIIn seems to have a bunch of H&V capable focus points, all clustered toward the center.
Wonder what the next 1D will have for focusing?
