I have several hundred old slides and I don't know how many b&w and color film negatives I would like to have scanned. I want as much resolution and detail as possible out of the scans. The local lab that I sometimes use seem (to me) to be extremely expensive. They want $10 minimun per slide to scan! Does anyone have any resources (web, mail order, etc.) that they have used for this service that would be more resonably priced? At the price the local lab is quoting I could go buy a good scanner, do the work myself, and still come out ahead.

I needed to do the same thing recently for pictures of my family. I bought an Epson scanner from Best Buy for $99 that actually has the attachment to scan 3 slides at a time. It automatically saves them in JPG format. A little slow - about 3 to 5 minutes per batch, but it saved me countless dollars.

That is going to be pretty much the norm, across the board. Best bet, for that many slides/negatives is to buy a decent slide scanner and do the work yourself. I'd reccomend a slide scanner over the flatbed with attachment though.

OK, I had been contemplating buying the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 II a while back. The beast costs $570 from B&H. Has anyone here used this scanner? I̢۪d like to hear some first hand experience if possible. What type file is the output in (jpeg, tiff, raw, etc)? How much setup is required? Do you have to change the setup, and how much, when you change film, lighting, etc. of the images?

Any information would be helpful.
