I was wondering the same thing... hopefully someone in the know will take pity on us and dish out some wisdom.

Specifically I was wondering what kind to use for studio work with AB 400's, and how.

I'm no pro on lightmeters, but this is a short and sweet explanation:
//photonotes.org/cgi-bin/entry.pl?id=Lightmeter

I have a Sekonic that doubles as an incident & reflected meter, as well as having a place to plug in the sync cord for my flash. I got it new a couple years ago for something like $175-ish.

Good luck!

(your camera has a built in meter, but a handheld comes in handy for flash photography, as well as any "tricky" lighting scenarios if your camera doesn't have spot metering capabilities)

I bought the new little Plaris one - ~$120. Its great and has all of the functions you need.

Sekonic is a great brand. If i were you i would go for a meter that can measure flash as well ambient light.As regards to ambient light , it would measure both reflected and inciedent.

P.S
there was this cheap 50-60$ meter from paterson listed in the site you mentioned, last time i checked out , it was out of stock
