While editing in raw in photoshop I noticed that and Adobe RGB 1998 file in 8bit, 300dpi was showing a size of 6144x4085 (25.1MP).

How can this be? My D70 only is a 6.1 MP. Can anyone explain this?

I've heard of some software automatically interpolating the file size up to double the original -- I can't remember if it's an in-camera setting or in the RAW import program, but I'd check both.

In the photoshop raw converter there is a pull down menu that will interpolate your raw file to a larger size and the largest of those is 25.1 MP (6144by4085) maybe you accidently clicked this and that is while your file is so large.

should be about 18Mb. You have a 6mb file, but 3 channels (RGB). So unless maybe you're in CMYK mode?

When you converted from RAW did you set some setting to change this? In Canon's DPP i can set the DPI i want, but it doesn't change the pixel count.

In the RAW conversion window in PS, there's a little scroll-down menu called "Size" that lets you change the resolution...it really just interpolates the image up (or down) like GeneralE said. You may have accidentally hit it?

Yes...in the pulldown menu I have several choices ...the highest is 25mp. So this is sort of like a "software" conversion to a higher resolution picture?

BTW....on some of the files....it does not give me the option to choose anything abouve 6mp ?!?!?

That's a great question I'd like to know also. Converting a RAW file for larger printing sizes; Will changing the DPI AND changing the Output size create a great file for printing? Or will this cause issues in the file? (haloing, artifacts, ect.) Or is this not needed for great large print?

Using the "Workflow Options" dialog and selecting a size other than the native size will do software resampling. When you open the list of available sizes, the ones that involve resampling have either a "-" or "+" sign next to them. Minus means size reduction, and plus means increased size.
You cannot create data, so increasing the size just gives a softer image.
