| I want to get a certain effect using only lighting, with minimal PS adjustment involved. I want to get a picture of myself sitting in a chair, with the light behind me, but all you can see is my outline -- the light behind me being the most prominent part of the picture. I know that to start I at least need my light source behind me, but I'm not sure where to go from there. Any hints? |

I think there is not much more. Just make sure that the only light comes from behind. Switch off your flash (I guess you already knew that ;-)). Avoid light being reflected from white walls. When the lighting from behind is bright enough and you use a short exposure time and/or narrow aperture then the high contrast will make look yourself only a silhouette.

great question, gren. I was kind of curious myself, so I just did a little bit of experimenting here... My results were mixed. I cranked the shutter speed up on my camera to 1/160, lit from behind, and killed all my front light. The result was ok, but not stellar. If you have some Beam-B-Gone (available from fine photography stores everywhere), it helps. My walls are white so I got a fairamount of splash. Another tip -- stay away from walls. They light up quite nicely. :)

Gren, I played around with lighting over the weekend and I too wanted to have the lighting at the back, yet effectively highlighting my model. I used a 500watt light at the back and the same directly on my models body. I used b&w with tungsten setting. Everything else was on auto. Here is the result.
