HI,
just got this ieda while voting: what if there was a way to use the 1 to 0 keyboard digits to vote instead of using the mouse? I don't know if this is possible... I know DPC has great coders, so maybe they'll think of something. Either some sort of script, or perhaps a plugin that can be added in Firefox and the likes?
Just an idea...
It sure would make the voting expereince more pleasant.
Cheers!

It's already possible. In fact, during voting I do my first pass using only 4-5-6 (95% of the time.) You hit the number you want to vote and hit to register the vote and go to the next image.
It makes voting VERY easy. ;)
Edit to add: Thread about keypad voting

I've actually suggested this as a part of a "package" of tweaks that I felt would enhance the voting experience. That discussion took place as a part of the "increased image size" discussion.
It is a good suggestion, and one that I'd personally like to see implemented. Save us from chasing the voting scale all over the screen with the mouse! :-)

What browser are you using? I know this to work on IE and Mozilla on Windows and Mozilla on Linux (some reason not Konqueror). |

Another idea:
A helpful function would be to be able to press a key (space bar?) to automatically scroll the top of the image to the top of the browser window.

I'm using IE6 on WinXP Pro both at work an home. Doesn't work on either my work or home computers. Perhaps this is realted to browser configuration?

It is possible. You have to have the "Begin finding when you begin typing" option enabled in Firefox. This way, when you hit say a 6, it will highlight the link for the 6 vote and hitting the enter key activates the link and registers the vote.

Ah, yep, browser configuration. Now, I can't find an equivalent setting for IE6, so here's the challenge... what setting enables this on IE?

I don't think IE has an equivalent setting for that. Yet another reason why you should switch to Firefox...

I would actually like to see voting done by picking 10 boxes...I know more work but hear me out.
You'd have 10 different sections (decided on the important parts of the image), something like: meets challenge, focus, color, position, etc. You pick each box you feel they meet to your satisfaction and it adds your score up automatically.
So your voting may look like this (items in () for example purposes would not be on voting page):
meets the challenge details=1
color=1
sharpness=1
nice framing(subject position)=1
exposure=0 (maybe you see blown out areas or too dark area)
pleasant=0 (distracting powerlines, hate the subject, etc)
DOF=0 (not shallow enough for your likings)
uniqueness=1
title=0 (maybe you think the title sucks)
etc
So points are totaled and member gets a 5.
You would add comments, if so desired and click submit.
The advantage I see with this is that it allows for the people that refuse to comment (or feel they aren't skilled enough to comment on someone elses photo) to still tell the photographer where they feel improvement could be done. This is also an advantage to the photographer because he can tell why his/her image got the score they got. This information would probably have to be available to the photographer via a link or something as I don't think everyone would needs to see how others voted on the image.
I also feel this may stop some of the threads we get after the challege asking why their image didn't do as well as they think it should have.
Just an idea, probably crazy and a lot of work but I never claimed to be normal anyway.

Wow. I could swear this worked in IE. Either I'm nuts or Microsoft changed something. As SamDoe mentioned, may it's time to switch? lol |

The problem with this approach is that I have seen plenty of shots that meet the challenge, have good color, are sharp, properly exposed, pleasant to look at, with appropriate DOF and a decent title, and have voted them 6 or 7, not 9.
It's that "uniqueness" that kept them from a "10" in your scale, but in MY scale unique counts for a LOT. I am looking for brilliance, it's important to me. And other intangibles.
Those shots I mentioned, all perfectly competent photographs that can't be sriously assigned any "flaws", but they just don't connect, they don't GO anywhere in my heart. So for me, voting is more of a gestalt thing. The FIRST thing I do is make a quick pass through sorting on gut reaction. If it's technically brilliant or emotionally compelling or any of a number of other things, it "makes the cut" and I'll be examining it more closely on a second pass.
But even on that second pass, those "details" you mention are secondary to the emotive aspect of the image, how compelling it is overall. For me the details are the difference between a 10 and a 9, as it were. I'd hate to see voting mechanized like this.

Aside from the time required, I agree with Robert... When I vote, I assess the "total impact" of the image in one go. I don't consciously separate the technicals from the intangibles.
The other issue with a multi-component voting strategy is that it's incompatible with the current voting statistics.

Hmmm. I had installed Firefox some time ago, but found no compelling reason to use it over IE, and some sites just did not format properly in Firefox, so I went back to IE. Perhaps it is time to give Firefox another look. I'd really love the keypad voting!

If you upgrade to FF 1.5 I think you'll find nearly all sites work well with it. Even my B of A online banking does, and it did not work with my earlier FF; I had to open IE to bank.
But damn, that little trick just cut easily 30-40% off my first-pass voting run...

It is a great little trick, I've been using it for a while now. :) And as far as the advantages over IE, Firefox gets far fewer issues with popups and all that garbage in my opinion. There is also the neat little tabbed windows option that greatly improves the space on the taskbar. Haven't had any problems with webpages not working in the 2 years I've been using this thing.
