Ok guys, I know I'm bad at taking pics, but this one came in 202/210. Why is it so bad?

because DPCers hate lens flare and they want subjects to "pop" out of the background. I gave your shot a 6 because it has a nice lonely-but-ok-with-it sort of mood and the lens flare makes the sky look slick.

sorry I didn't get to vote on yours but I would have given it a 5 or 6. I am not bothered by the lens flare but I think the sky could use more depth. not that you had control over that but more clouds on the upper half would have mad it better. also if the plane was larger I would have liked it more. I like the dark mood of it and as posthumous said it has a lonely feel that I like as well. so the more I look at it I would say 6
while we are on the subject of scoring low maybe you can help me understand why mine scored so low 206/210

Considering this was advanced editing, you could have done a lot to improve your photo. It's not bad as it is, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I would have given it a 5 or 6.
Elvis_L : Your photo is good too, but there are a few flaws which make it look weird. The background should have less detail, as now the image looks too busy. The shadow on the flower is also a no-no. And the upper left of the image is kinda empty which throws the photo off-balance. |

A change in the image 'gamma', somewhat akin to contrast curve, would have helped. The subject against the sky needs a more contrasty look. This may be difficult to achieve without destroying the effect of the sun and the lens flare. Composition is fine. |

I enjoy lens flare myself. I am always looking for info on what lenses provide good amounts of it, although it does have to look appropriate to the picture. You need to make it look like it is there intentionally. I think you did this well. Aerial shots often benefit with a good bit of lens flare IMHO.
Some of my favorite lens flare comes from movies like Out of Africa and other similar era, African themed stuff. Great feel in the photography there.
I like the colors and mood in this shot. Low range makes this a difficult shot to really swing.
I think it's a fine picture for your collections, but I am going to guess that the low contrast is what threw your vote. |

You have a very few seconds if that long in which to grab folks attention. Private collections are for the artists tastes and can look like whatever they want and who cares what others think. Once it is in public, then the rules are different. Many berate the masses for thier lack of true appreciation etc., however, the masses will glance at any work momentarily, and it better grab them somehow, or they will forget they saw it. For me, it took a hard look to see the plane, which to me was the point of the shot. The subject was too hard to see and lacked detail. It was framed well and the flare is not troubling to me whatsoever. |
