Hi,

I'm looking for some feedback on the following photograph I submitted in the Photojournalism contest last week.

I kinda have a suspicion that my title didn't go down favourably with voters, who perhaps thought it was a bit too subjective. That wasn't my goal - I just wanted to create a more sensationalist title for what I thought was a newspaper style competition.

Should I stay well clear of anything too political in the future?

I think you may be right.

The image's score may have suffered from people with pro-socialist leanings scoring the image down because of the title. However, I believe that the impact of those votes would have been minimal overall.

In my opinion, anything that get a 6+ average here is a damn good photo, so I think you did quite well.

I think the image received the score it deserved regardless of the title.

I made a comment that your photo actually disproved your headline, but I didn't dock you for it. It's a good picture and I gave it a 7.

I personally thought the title fit the picture great. It was humorous and fitting with what was going on in the pic - even if it was the exact opposite. "Socialism not a threat" or any other title that had a serious bent to it would not have been the same. I still think this is a great shot. Well done. I think it should have placed a bit higher.

Assuming you meant the title to be a bit sarcastic, I really like it... but (and you knew there HAD to be a but) as one commentor pointed out, in a PJ challenge, voters were probably not expecting social commentary, just reportage. That probably did bring down your score.
The WA perspecttive used did distort the figures somewhat. I'm not sure I'd change that. I think the perspective kinda fits the subject.
I agree with the one commentor that suggested that fill flash might have helped the harsh lighting, but again, I think the stark lighting works here; the one thing that bugs me is the loss of contrast and detail in the faces of the men. Perhaps a different strategy for B+W conversion could have helped that.

Thanks folks - some good advice here! I guess I was just a bit surprised that people paid much attention to the title. The two men in the photo look so pathetic; I couldn't resist making reference to them. If you think the title was funny ΓΆ€“ you should have heard them. lol

Some filler flash would have helped I think. Lesson learned!
