My rebel xt is getting a few clicks on the shutter, and I'm curious if anyone knows when it is economically feasable to replace the body. I don't want to get to the point where a shutter is likely to fail or something else very serious could happen. I would rather sell a working camera and upgrade than sell a broken camera and upgrade. Right now my Rebel XT has about 10,000 clicks. Should I be good for another 10,000? It has held up well thus far.

im about to pass 20000 with my 300D. my feeling on this is that by the time comes to replace your "old" camera, the resale value wont be that great. I'd always keep it as a backup before I went and sold it.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm going from memory, but I believe the MTBF for the shutter is 20,000 or 30,000 activations. A shutter replacement is relatively affordable (about $200 I think) so certainly not in itself a reason to get rid of the camera, unless you're thinking of upgrading anyway.

I gree with CJ.
25000 on the 300D, 50,000 on the 20D, 100K on the 30D.
The 350 is like the 300 i belive.
the 5D i don't know. 1D status? (200k) or less??

My 300D had 9996 on it when i sold it, still worked fine.

How do you know how many clicks you have? If it's from reading the # on your memory card, I have so many different memory cards that I switch around and use on other cameras as well

if you have continous numbering on then you know. otherwise you have to send it to canon to be dug out the firmware.

Assuming you have used sequential numbering from the beginning and have not reset it, this is the 20,866th image. Canon EOS digital cameras place images in folders of 100 images. The first such folder was numbered 0100 and contained images 0101-0200. Folder 0309, therefore, will contain images numbered 20901-21000...because numbering began at 101, actual shutter clicks will be 100 less.

I have a 300D with about 40,000 shutter clicks. Still going, hopefully through the summer. :)

How do you check the actual clicks on the shutter?

July last year. I do a lot of remote shooting of birds and fill the card with 250+ shots and throw most of them out. That's how I've racked up so many.

I've got 31,515 on my baby and it's still going strong! :)

I had just under 8,000 on my 300d when the shutter broke (thankfully still under warranty). I replaced it with a 20d, had it repaired and now keep it as a backup. :)

With certain EXIF readers that give more complete information, Canon's EXIF has a binary number that transposes to actual number of shutter actuations. However, this number includes the number of times you opened the shutter to clean the sensor. But overall should be real close...at least as close as the number of times you cleaned the sensor.

If you maintain your camera fairly well and keep it clean, no reason why, with normal maintenance, it shouldn't last you many, many years. I still have the first Canon I ever got, a T-50. This has over 80 thousand actuations and has never had the shutter replaced. Still works like the day it was purchased.

I belive the XT's shutter is rated to last atleast 50,000 shutter actuations.

hey sometimes they keep chugging along, if a 1D can hit 500,000, why can't a 350D hit 50,000 every now and then?
