I just started working on a new business card and was wondering what your immediate thoughts on these ones were. The first one is my old one, and the 2nd two are the first ones I've attempted today. Feel free to be critical!

Should I for sure include my email on the card as I did with my old one? Would you order glossy or matte?

Thanks for lookin'!

The "y" on photography seems to be several point sizes larger than the rest of the letters. That doesn't work fro me. I liek the framing of the face better in the second version, but dislike how "www" gets lost on the shirt. The line's somehwat superfluois, I think, in version 3. I's include my e-mail as well, instead of forcing people to dig it out of the website.

I really like number 2. It's an excellent shot of the boy and placed well on the card. Number 1 is fairly good but I don't care too much for the border on number 3

Thanks Rob-
That is the first time I have ever noticed the 'y' being so large looking and that old business card is a year old...LOL

Thanks for all the feedback :) Do you think the pic is alright or is it kinda blah? Choosing pics for a card is so hard!

accck, it isn't on the first one I must have forgotten to select the Y when working on the new ones. Good catch.

Owen.....thanks for your feedback too!

I agree. It's also the cleanest and easiest to read although I would make the URL a bit smaller so the www part is on the white or put a soft white halo behind it so it separates from the background.

Ok, fixed the Y, added my email, and put the outer glow on the www...

Much better. Now increase the leading (space between lines) on the data part by 10-15%; it's running a bit cramped right now. Also you might consider justifying the headline to the same margin as the data bloc.

Like so?

Yes, very much so. The leading is much more professional looking now, and the right justification looks intentional rather than accidental. However, you've introduced a slight problem with the "p" on "photography" and its relationship to the model's face/eye. That part looked better on version 3. The solution is to slightly expand the size of the headline/display font area so the "p" moves back into the face and the forms fit well together.

R.

YOu can probably do it just by slightly expanding the width on "photography" then moving "jralston" as needed to keep the same relative position.

hmmm.. looks good to me. only thing I don't really like is how the "p" in photography is touching his eyebrow.. I would move the kid down a little bit or something...

edit: looks like bear music beat me to it

i really like the 1st one. I would put just the pic on the front & all your contact info on the back.
Good stuff!

Contact info on the back doesn't work for professionals. The cards go into tolodexes or card files, or get scanned into an electronic database, and 2-sided doesn't cut the mustard. For the same reason, vertical cards are iffy.

I shoot everything from weddings to new product lines and my oh-so-generic card has served me very well in all situations. (Backside is my dog Lexi in her clown suit - see my profile - in one corner... plenty of room for me to make note of appointment date/time or whatever.

Here is one more before I go make dinner:

Do you like the first one I was working on or this type better?
05/06/2006 02:43:23 PM · #18
I like this one.... what would it look like if you switched the middle pic with the far right one?

Now that one I like the best.

I like all of them... so I guess I'm not much help, huh! I think I like the simplisity of the one with the first one with the little boy the best, but I love the sany hands shot too. Any of them would "sell" me on your photography if I was looking to hire you.

really? Sounds about right but I've seen a few I really like 'em. Of course I'm no pro & would defer to the better judgement of folks here who more knowledgable.

Tough call between the boy w/no border and the the triptych card. Wondering how much detail you'd lose when it's printed at business card size though. Maybe the one little boy would make more of statement, plus it's nice and simple.

As far as glossy vs. Matte, On my last order I got glossy on the main side and matte on the back side. The glossy looks great but I'm now wishing I had gotten matte on both side. Mainly because my cards have a black background and fingerprints really show up on it. Also, when I first got them some of the black scrapped off pretty easily but I'm thinking now that was because they were freshly printed as they're not so apt to scratch now.

I'll go against the flow on this one. While it doesn't look too bad all blown up on the screen, this card is only gonna measure a few inches in reality and those will be tiny images. I also think the lines are superfluous, especially the one on the right. I'd stick with the single-image version.

I far prefer matter to glossy cards, myself, but that's a matter of preference more than anything.

Thanks everyone! Bear...them lines drive ya nuts, huh? LOL I don't know why I like them so much. I messed with so many designs last night that my head is spinning! I should just pick one!!!

Thanks for your help. I don't know why this is so hard. I liked my old one a lot, but I just want a change! I think I will go with matte. I never thought of fingerprints with glossy, but its a great point. Anyways.....here are ones I worked on last night. I gotta stop making them..LOL

and just for you bear...LOL:

I'm with the Bear on this
Keep it simple loose the lines
and recognise that the cards are small so
go with this one

it's simple effective and readable when reduced to the actual size
