This is what we call Nutria. They burrow (sp?) into the levee system and weaken the levee. In Jefferson Parish, (county next to New Orleans) the Sheriff once had his deputies shoot hundreds of these guys each weekend because they were getting out of control.
They are an "invasive" species not native to Louisiana but now flourish here!
This is a shot of one at a local park swimming in the lagoon. This particular guy was about the size of a toy poodle and looked to weigh about 10-12 pounds.

From South America, brought here for the fur and escaped. Now they are here forever.
