OK. I have a question for those of you who do portrait photography for sale to other people.

Do you take the time to work up a proof sheet? Is it even necessary when dealing with the digital world when you can just show the client the proofs on the screen?

Would these be passable as proof sheets (as far as layout goes, anyway)?

If not, why not?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

that looks like that will work fine,
if you have a website you can show your proofs through that.

or you can use photosohp and automate them all into small pics and burn to a cd.

I've never seen a proof sheet before, just individual proofs. But, I don't see anything wrong with that. The other thing to consider is that people will often buy the proofs.

What are you using for a backdrop in these pictures?

I would just add a thin white border around the darker pictures, this stops them from bleeding into the background.

In the pictures, I've got several backdrops that I've made from fabric bought at thrift stores and Wal*Mart. I'm not happy with the white one (yes, the bg in the pics on the first proof sheet is supposed to be white), but I think a large part of the problem is with the lighting. Live and learn!
The bg for the reddish ones is a hand-dyed bg I did using white fabric and RIT dye in a spray bottle. Made a mess, but it turned out nice.

Anybody else with an opinion on this?

I would never know the background was supposed to be white, so don't tell anyone. Shhhhh....

I believe that will work. I think the black brings out the picture more. But, your ink is going to go away quickly. As noodleboy said, a website works very well too. That's what I use for my shots.

Sara, these proof sheets will do just fine for your client to choose from. I sometimes give them pages with many more (smaller) shots when we're in a rush. The advantage of the proof sheet is - they're much less tempted to just buy the proofs and make their own copies you when you show them something on a page with other shots than when you offer a 4X6 of each shot.

Those look great by the way. Your lighting is very nice and I especially like the posing in the 2nd group.

Where did you get your proof sheet made? Is that something Costco could do for me.

I sign the backs of my proofs to discourage piracy.

@ kopa21 - I hadn't thought about using up so much ink! I'll probably get them printed elsewhere if I use printed ones and I may just put them on the 'web otherwise.

@ idnic - thanks! Also - good point about the copying individual proofs.

@ ragamuffingirl - I made the proof sheets in the GIMP. Haven't printed them out yet (out of ink dammit!). I've got them sized so that one proof sheet is 8x10 so I should be able to get them printed wherever.

@ Raziel - good point about the darker ones fading into the black.

Thanks everyone for your help!!
