GOOGLE>>>>>

There are many variations of Clichés and Sayings. I got the "DNMC, the saying actually goes"... comment and thought to myself, 'well, that's how I've always know it'. So I googled it thinking 'hey, I could be wrong'. Got 12,000,000 hits. So step outside your narrow mindedness and at least check the saying before you say it doesn't exist. Thanks. I just wanted to get that off my chest.

I guess you could move this to rant if you want.

That's why I'm giving the benefit of the doubt in cases where I don't recognise the saying, or know it word for word.

Someone else commented in another thread quite aptly that many sayings are regional. And even that is within a specific language.

On the other hand, some sayings are pretty much the same everywhere.

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" is pretty stable and seems to have popped up a fair bit in the challenge.

Other sayings are actually commonly misquoted.

One that showed up recently in the forums here was "The proof is in the Pudding" which is actually supposed to be "The proof of the pudding is in the eating"...

Voting it down though because of using a common, but erroneous variant is dangerous elitism.

Stating in a comment that a saying is not accurate is fair though. Just as you are giving your POV on it, the other person is giving you theirs.

Being an international challenge, there is a good chance of not knowing the clichés or saying. So I wouldn't drop the score of any that I don't know or might think is wrong based on my limited knowledge.

This person had to have given me a 1 by the drop in my score. I happened to be looking at it at the time.

for my own knowledge, I was going to photo a woman sitting in a church sweating a bunch and title it "sweating like a whore in church" but I thought that it may get voted down because of offended someone or people not hearing of that phrase. do you think this would have been the case?
05/04/2006 12:17:44 PM · #9
I wouldn't have voted it down. I know the saying. But, maybe your model would have been offended, LOL.
05/04/2006 12:19:31 PM · #10
yeah, well, mine has a title that doesn't realy go with the picture and i am getting hit because of that. biiiiiiig mistake to change the photo 5 min before going to sleep and then forget to change the title......just don't do that guys...it hurts the score (I'm at 5.10 right now)....sniff, snifff

I certainly would have thought it was funny, especially if she were dressed the part :-)

I hit the cliche right on, no other takers and great comments thus far - only now I'm in limbo because I was requested to submit mine to SC. Still waiting to hear the outcome. I'm a stickler about rules, so if I broke any, I'm sorry!!! (I sound like Kelly Pickler when she was still on Idol!).

In voting I don't have a DNMC issue with pictures. That is because I value image quality and photographic merit over the challenge topic. I do, however, raise a score for an image that meets my own interpretation of the challenge topic well. However, I'm not smart enough to think I know better what the challenge topic means than the photographer that takes the picture.

I figure I counteract those that would rate the Mona Lisa a 5 in a challenge called "frowning" when the actual intent of the artist was to show dichotomy between a frown and a smile.

I'm surprized that no one had my idea (I didn't have time to enter)

I was going to shoot a bannana in my pocket and of course the title would have been...

" ....or are you glad to see me?"

Comments?

I know that quote as "The proof is in the pudding" too

so it's not a mis quote but possibly a regional variation

Yes tallbloke, that is kinda the point I was trying to make.

It's hard to separate a regional variation from the original version, which is sometimes just a development of time and culture...

Hence, to vote it because a person might not have a deep etymological understanding of the saying is counter-productive, pointless and did I mention redundant?

Who is to say it's not in a current phase of development.

Of course the sentence "the proof is in the pudding" has a slightly different meaning, so one would hope that this would be reflected suitably in the picture.

This is after all a photo contest, not an English contest.
