OK, these are actually from the same series as my earlier thread on my first day shooting with the 30D.
Like I said, I had a LOT of good pictures to work with...
I am about 2/3 of the way through them now and stand a good chance of finishing them tonight.
It is interesting to see my learning curve from the initial few pics taken and modified to the pics taken a few days later and the further difference in the learning curve from the pictures edited a few days ago, indeed even those that were edited earlier in the day compared to the last few I edited.
I am not sure if it is just because I am getting more comfortable with my tools and more willing to try different things, but pictures I ignored before are showing up...
Here's an example of one I didn't think to make a few days ago but was surprised to see come out of the mix:
But the real kicker was this gem  which quite honestly BLEW me away.
Sadly, the pictures were taken with a lens that I found out this week had a faulty focus calibration and was interfering with accurate focusing. Aside from the focus issue, I wonder how that B&W pic would have done in a suitable challenge? What would you have voted?
I would LOVE some C&C on these. I am still quite new to photography and these pictures are a great example of something I am doing for the first time.

Is it legal to have a skewed border like you do for the first one? I think the first one is a 7 for me (6 if I'm in a bad mood). The second one is a 6 unless it met the challenge really well or in an interesting way, then it would be a 7.

Can you tell me what is wrong/missing with the shots?
The skewed border IS legal, even in basic. There is precedent already with a shot of Bear_music's and I verified the technique with SC.
Nothing has been added to the picture, it looks like this because of arbitrary rotation. |

I would not have subtracted for the skewed border. I like the effect and I would have left it to the SC to DQ (but I never request a DQ. I think that's narcy).
6 means there's nothing wrong with the shot. To get higher than 6 is a matter of positives, not lack of negatives. I am not a sharp focus freak. Focus should vary to affect the mood of the picture. I like the first one a little better because of its dynamic colors and shapes. The second one is just lovely, a nice juxtaposition of faces, an intimate crop. On a good day I might indeed give it a 7. To get higher scores, I need to feel something visceral from the photo AND something exciting, original, innovative and/or intellectually stimulating. But for me, 7 is a good score. It means that I truly like it and it meets the challenge.

The pictures themselves are pretty exciting to me.
I actually went without sharpening on the first picture. I love how it captures the frenetic spirit of that particular child during playtime. And classtime :(...
heh.
Considering my score in the current challenge, it looks like I might have a chance at actually grabbing a 6+ in the next 20 years if I keep working hard!!! :)
What really makes me happy is that this improvement has been rapid, dramatic and is not necessarily tied to an exclusive camera. |
