AFAIK the TIFF format only uses the LZW algorithm for compression, and it is lossless -- essentially the same as is used for the ZIP archive format. I've never heard of a TIFF using lossy compression. |

Does PNG support layers and 16 bits/channel? |

You're right that PNG has many benefits over JPGF, TIFF, and GIF. But what benefit does it have for photos? PNG wasn't designed for photos and doesn't do a very good job with them.
You said JPEG "compresses better so it allows more to fit on the card." Exactly. The fact that it "compresses better" also means you get better image quality for the same file size (e.g., for a 150k image on DPC).

Layers no, 16-bit yes.
Edit to just answer the question.

AFAIK png does actually support layers (it's the native format of Macromedia Fireworks and it saves layers) and I just did a google search and it can save 16 bits per channel. |

If this site were geared more toward rasterized vector graphics, I'd agree that PNG would be a valuable choice. I don't see it as adding much value to a site geared toward photos. |
You aren't thinking long term. Digital/photographic art is here to stay and in 5-10 years will look more like vector graphics. Mark my words!!!! :P

this is a great point. And in addition what is bad about having extra choices? I personaly don't want to see anyone forced into anything, and there would not have to be any changes in the rules (so the filesize still has to be in the same range).

Without layers, it's not much good as an intermediate file format. |

FWIW, the GIF and PNG formats are both optimized for non-photographic images, whereas JPG is optimized for photographic image storage. |
EUOA violation. ;-) |

Well, if it does Photoshop CS2 certainly didn't recognize them in my test. Maybe Gimp does.

Macromedia Fireworks saves everything as PNG and includes layers. |

Interesting. I appear to have been mislead about PNG being no loss/better compression then JPG.
Thanks for the information. (Although, admittedly, I could have gone to Wikipedia and found that myself.) |
