I just don't get it. I know why a bunch of my photos haven't scored well out here up til now. I usually try and go out and find something to shoot and I'm not in control of the lighting, background, subject etc. not to mention that I usually only have a couple hours to find something in a big city where concrete rules. But I now have the ability to setup some lighting again and on the last challenge I was given a thread link that talked about, "tired of scoring 3.5 to 5" by scalvert.
So along comes Comp Colors and I come up with the Peeps photo concept. The picture looks good. It's not outstanding like the blue ribbons but a nice solid pic that obviously involved thought, time, creativity and execution, just like that thread talked about. Be creative. Take a different angle.
How many flowers were in this challenge? Water still continues to score well. How many times are we going to look at that tired subject? So my creative photo totally tanks. You guys give it the same score as a photo that I took that was blurry and I post processed to death to make it abstract that took like 3 minutes tops to create.
I just can't understand how 39 votes gave me a 3 and almost 1/3 of the votes were a 4.
I used to handout 5,6, and 7's like they were candy. I figured if you at least took the time to shoot a photo, it was on topic and decent I'll give you a 5 (average) and then I went from there. But after getting the scores I have, I figured I'd have to adjust my thinking and be more like a DPC'er. On the last two challenges I have become jaded in my scoring. I handed out 2,3, and 4's like they were candy.
DPC has been a very good instructional place for new and interesting ways to shoot photos and I've incorporated them in my day to day shots. But like so many complaints before me, the way the photos get scored is very, very disheartening. I expected this photo to score between oh 5.1 and 5.7. I was shocked after the first hour to see it pop up 4.1 with 10 votes or so. I knew I was in trouble.
I suppose I'll continue submitting stuff but I still can't figure out how some of the photos that finished way above me, like .5 to .8 points more, we just avg. shots in the field or bad focus or blown out in places. I'm trying to have a thick skin but it's just plain frustrating...
