are we allowed to tamper with curves when entering a basic editing challenge?

Yes, and I encourage it ;-)

Yes, just so you tamper with the whole image without selecting an area.

Yep, curves are a good tool. Just make sure adj are to the whole image (no spot editing) and also make sure it is in NORMAL mode.

Absolutely! The trick, of course, is knowing what to do with it. ;)

Here are a just a couple things it works well for...

1-Midtone Contrast
That is where you have it set to display 4 vertical and horizontal lines. Everything between the left and rightmost horizontal lines defines midtones. Then you click on the lower left intersection to set a drag point and one on the right intersection point. If you drag those points so as to make the slope bettween them steeper you increase midtone contrast. If you move them to decrease the slope between them then you decrease midtone contrast. This works best with Adjustment Layer mode set to "luminosity"

2-Color Correction
Unfortunately, this presupposes that you understand what complimentary colors are in PS. ;) It is not the same as the current challenge says. Bummer! :(

Those "other" complimentary colors used by PS for color correction are:
a-Red/Cyan
b-Green/Magenta
c-Blue/Yellow

Say the people in your picture look like they have a sunburn when they don't. That means you have a red color cast in your picture that needs correction. LOL!

In Curves what you do is select "red" (down from RGB) in the pull down menu at the top. Then click the exact center point of the diagonal line to set a drag point. Then drag that point AWAY from the word 'red' above. That reduces a red color cast. Drag it CLOSER to the word 'red' and it reduces a cyan color cast. It is as simple as that.

Imagine that!

And they said I was just another pretty face!

but bear in mind that extreme adjustments which result in "major" elements disappearing (being blown out for example) might infringe on the "major elements" rule and thus be in risk of DQ.

Thank you... I'm still holding out for the ladies thinking that, though. LOL!!

My apologies... mostly I forget about DPC as a specialized application for the use of post processing tools like Curves. One of my suggestions, if taken fully, is good for DPC "advanced" editing only.

I process images for the "real" world. LOL! When I am done with an image and decide I want it to meet DPC basic rules I carefully follow these steps:

1-Say, Oh Damn!

2-Hide all the none basic rules layers

3-Duplicate and remove all the non-basic rules components in the new layer(s)

4-Grumble about how much crappier it looks

5-Flatten, crop, resize, sharpen and save for the web.

OK... OK... I will back off on all the snide remarks I've made about you, but I'm not sure how long I can hold out. Its tough for me to be nice. LOL!
