Do cameras have hidden codes in the images and stuff? like for piracy or say some one commits a crime, then shoots a photograh of it and puts it on the net they can track it back to the photographer? hidden S/N in the image or what ever? do SLRs have things like this?

Im watching an "on demand" show with Bill Gates and they are talking about digital images and piracy and stuff.

I want to put my name on my images hidden in the info of the picture.

Digital cameras record EXIF data which includes date/time of exposure and make/model/serial number of camera. Of course, the date won't pass forensic stahndards because you can reset the date in your camera. The camera info can be altered if you have the right software. You can strip the EXIF completely when you "save for web" also.

But still, it's theoretically possible to track the camera if the EXIF is intact and the camera was registered by the buyer for warranty purposes, I suppose.

How do you find your EXIF information?

Right Click the image. Go to Properties and then open the Summary tab.

Also related but different is digital watermarking which adds a signature, of sorts, to an image which can be read in software, but is naked to the eye. It can survive minor editing and is a post-processing or workflow act rather than camera based.

You have to set that in your camera -- not all cameras have that capability. Try contacting Canon support.

If you can do it you'll be able to do it through Canon CameraWindow (software that came with your camera). I did it for my 20d through there.

Or use software that allows you to edit the Exif eg Photoshop, I think Irfanview does too & its free

Remember though the info can be removed or edited just as easily
