OK, I'm new to trying to do photographic art, so the whole ins and out of the art world are a bit strange to me.
I'd like to try to be shown in a gallery. What should I know or do? How about pricing? How many pieces do galleries expect?
It's all greek to me... educate me please.

There are two that I know of here in Mobile, so yes. They aren't large, but they're here. :-)

What kinda Art Leroy? I used to do the Gallery showings with my digital rendered images, its a fickel deal. I would go to some gallery showings and talk to the people who run them, learn what type of clients, people attend them. Big images, nice frames, nice matting, all play into the equation. Do some research first, get to know your target group is. Remember you and you yourself are the one promoting your pics. |

Probably art nudes. I'm not sure how the market here would take them though. The state itself (as is the city of Mobile) is pretty conservative. I'd assume that art buyers are a bit more liberal, but like I said, I'm not sure at all.

Could start with the "high-contrast study of the human form variety" of semi-nudes and work your way into the edgier stuff. You know, when community standards loosen up -- like in 50 years? Hmm, 83. That would make you a real Dirty Old Man instead of Dirty Old Man In A Young Man's Body. lol |

Ieuw ;)
Take your portfolio, walk inside a gallery and ask if your work can be shown.
Worked for me! ;-) |

A lot of galleries only show a certain "style" of art and the owners get frustrated when people come in wanting their stuff to be shown when it's a completely different style. You may want to pay attention to what their showing now and what they've shown in the past before asking if they would want to show yours.
But of course, it never hurts to ask anyway. ;-)
Good luck!

if you're interested in galleries and gallery showings, there's this guy in mobile you might want to check out: printer-friendly article (you don't have to print it). if you go see him, though, take a couple six packs and don't mind the dogs...
his website link

if you don't, it's on his site. all the same, i'd rather just walk in on him with a half-case of bee-ah. it looks like he's hosting works by other photographers, as well as his own. |

i found that submiting to local juried shows
was a way to get exposure & gallery space
there are several "call for submitions" from galleries around here
likely the same may be in Mobile .. |

tell him skip said, "heyah". even if you don't want to carry anything with you (other than beer), it would probably be a pretty cool place to look around for a bit. |
