Can I take it that you're not a fan of microstock sites? |
I think there are images that belong in microstock sites and some that aren't. The value of a license to use a photo is determined by the usage. If some kid has a blog and wants to use your photo 10 cents might be a fair price. I think most of you guys in the future will look back and think "I cant believe I was giving my stuff away that cheap". I think if I were uploading to these sites I would only give them so many pixels and save the large ones for real money.
Here is a shot I sold in January Nothing spectacular but worth $250. Some of the images I see you guys are selling look like they could have some large usages. It seems like it would insulting to cash that check. I wonder where the market will be in 5 or 10 years. |
I only have a 4MP camera so any of the bigger sites I have checked into like Alamy and MyLoupe will not accept my stock photos. Until I have a 6MP or larger camera I am stuck with microstock. Which is fine for me for now. Eventually, when I can save enough money from microstock and other savings, I will get a better camera and probably move to the larger sites.

I'm sure that image would make at least $250 for you on the microstock sites, over time. A long time ago a rather wealthy business owner told me it's easier to make fast dimes than slow dollars. I'll take a couple dollars a day any time over one - two sales every few months. But that's just me. Just remember--the 4-star restaurant may charge a LOT more for a meal than McDonalds, but at the end of the day McDonalds makes a LOT more money. Plus, I enjoy shooting stock, and it's fun to watch the numbers grow a little at a time. Again, just my $.02--no disrespect to those who think otherwise... |

Ditto to all of the above. I especially agree with the sentiment of no disrespect to those who think otherwise. It seems that some of those who think otherwise don't feel the same way. |

I'm giving away this image on micro stocks.... well I guess "giving" should be used loosely since this image has made me roughly $500. ;-)

Not to pry, but are the sales #s high on microstock sites? If you are only getting say 25 cents a sale, do you make money for your time? I am not judging, but wondering. I have not tried microstocks. And those that do make money at it, How many images do you have on them and/or how many photos a month do you add?

I'll take a stab at your questions Bryan. In general, yes the sales volume at microstock sites is high. I am only signed up at istockphoto, so my answers will only pertain to my experience there. For 2006, I have sold 939 photos for an average of about fifty nine cents each, total $559.60. I started the year with 173 uploads and have so far added 92 more, totalling 265 available as of today. My goal is to end the year with 500 available. Outside of normal downloads, I made an additonal $37.50 on the sale of two "BuyRequest" photos (I don't think the other micro sites have anything similar but I may be mistaken). Another financial benefit is the ability to legitimately deduct expenses from income taxes, including a portion of vacation expenses. All in all, my participation at istock allows me to make a little cash back on a hobby I enjoy... it certainly pays better than golf, at least in my case. :)

Shutterstock is my best. I get Loads rejected from istock.
My best seller is this one:
I am really worried I'm gonna see my face on the side of a bus with the tag-line 'Got Herpes?' or something similar... |

yes, microstock is a viable money maker.
how many images you need.. depends on how much you want to make. You should be able to earn between $4.00-$10.00 depending on your types of images.

Serpentine Road has sold over 119 times for me. By far the best seller.
