I've browsed the forums but didn't really find anything to help me so here ya go:
I'm tough on tri-pods for some reason (typically the cheap ones I've had are a pain in the butt to use and I end up damaging them) - usually in the car under the seat or something. Anyway, I've purchased a new "SuperZoom? P-and-S and i'm looking for a compact, inexpensive tri-pod that is easy to open and close and offers the feature of rotating the camera to the side. I also use the D70 all the time so I would like it to safelky support that. I also have a video camera that I might try on it also.
I realize that I'm probably asking for something that should cost 400$ but I'm really not sure where to start with tri-pods. Any thoughts?

Spend as much as you can afford, a good tripod (imo) is better than . I went through the list of cheapos, last year finally cut out and got a good one and wowsa what a difference! Total investment was somewhere are $300ish.
Contact deapee - he was talking about getting rid of his tripod. Don't know if he was serious or not but he may have been.

I'd highly recommend the setup I'm currently using, which consists of the Bogen 3021B Pro legs and Bogen 488RC4 head. This combination is quite stable and very versatile; total cost is around $240 USD. In particular, it's very easy to flip the camera to portrait orientation due ot the two slots in the ball head. It also has a separate rotational movement so you can lock the ball head and still pan horizontally.
There are two "flavors" of the head, the RC4 version and the RC2 version. The difference is the style of the camera mounting plate. The RC4 has a large plate and a very secure clamp system. The clamp system of the RC2 (which I used to have) is less stiff, which I found to be a problem with larger lenses. Strangeghost and I have used the 488RC4 for astrophotography, piggybacked on a 12-inch telescope, and it is very stable indeed.

Check out Velbon's line as well. I've seen some good recommendations for them. Apparently they have one that has 3 or 4 sections in the legs which is extremely light and compact when folded up I can't remember what it is or where I read about it, but it was an old photography teacher's website or something and he liked it better than the manfrotto or the Gitzo versions.
Velbon seems to have a pretty good handle on magnesium stuff too.
I use their mounting plate system which I find quite stiff and very light. Lighter than all the mini-plate systems by all the others actually.
If money is no object and neither is weight, I'd go Gitzo. Their stuff is just fantastic in the way it works.
