I knew that monitor calibration was important and that I needed to do it one of these days; that's why I haven't been messing with photos too much and trying to stick to autolevels and autocolor, but my gosh! I didn't figure it would be that off because this laptop is new... my screen used to be so much bluer, and now it is much more beige and gray, I think I liked my ocean pix better the other way. *pout* --not to mention I had been wondering how DrAchoo's blue eyes and green nose could have such unrealistically blue eyes--
anyway, a starter edition of Adobe Photoshop Album came with my calibration software, and it is up for grabs if anyone would like it... |

You'll get used to the redish tint soon enough. It looks wrong at first, but after a few days, you won't want to ever go back, and uncalibrated monitors will drive you nuts!
What calibration unit did you get? I went with the Huey a few weeks ago and haven't looked back.

also, wanted to note that my old submission looks much older now.. Ha! anyway, I got Spyder2express 2.2 ... figured that entry level basic calibration software would be better than none and good enough for me, and it was a lot easier to install and use than computer software usually is for me, that was nice

You can still fix the ocean pictures to make them back to the way you like them. The difference is that now everyone else with reasonably calibrated monitors will be able to see them the way you do. LOL! You stand a much better chance that your prints will look like what you see now, not a given but will be closer.
You were smart to use autolevels and autocolor on your images before. Those are fairly dependable generic adjustments when your monitor calibration is off.
I often try the "auto" functions on my images before doing serious post processing work. It gives me a good idea what the image needs and sometimes I might accept them as a starting point. I always try a quick autolevels after I'm done post processing to. Generally speaking there isn't much change at the end unless I got to far off in my post processing. I use the "auto" functions at the end as a reality check that my image is done the way I want it and doesn't have unwanted contrast or color cast issues.

Congratulations! I was truly taken aback when I first did a hardware calibration... I was glad that I spent the money for it when I saw the results... Not only are the colors more realistic, but it is easier on my eyes to look at the screen. I like watching my screen change from the default state to the calibrated state once the calibration settings are applied at startup. I will have to say though, it worked wonders on my plasma desktop monitor, but it didn't really have much effect on my laptop--I have an old laptop though.
Welcome to the world of a properly calibrated monitor, and as others have said, you may not be able to use an uncalibrated monitor ever again. lol |

I second that ... I am against calibration of monitors. I am doing better and better at fooling the uncalibrated voters.

well, you have get calibration software... here is the website for the brand that I bought... spyder2express
you plug the device into your computer and sit it on your monitor and it displays all of the color spectrum on your monitor and the device tells the computer whether or not the colors are looking like they should and adjusts them accordingly |

Thats actually one of the cheaper ones in the calibration market. You could spend 500-600 or more. |

I've been thinking about getting this one--it's inexpensive, and sounds pretty good in theory. Anyone have it? Opinions?

I just got a Huey about a month ago, and I love it. It was easy to use, it has made a HUGE difference in my screen, and in my images, too. Honestly, I suppose the Spyders might be a bit more "pro", but I can't justify that much money being spent when the Huey does such a great job.
I can honestly say that I wouldn't trade mine, nor could I work again without it.

| honestly, I didn't make the spyder purchase decision, my bf bought it when he made his big order from b&h, I think it was the cheapest one that they sold, otherwise we might have gotten huey or something else less expensive. talk about gouging a selective market with high demand. but besides, he had worked with spyder a lot in the past and knew that it was good quality without spending hundreds of dollars. |
