| Finishing my shopping cart, and need to make a final decision on the flash. I've heard some say stick with canon, others say the metz outperforms the 580EX. |

| I don't know about Metz flash but i think it is like a soft box or umbrella, so then i prefer 580EX because i can't travel or take that Metz everywhere i go, but if Metz is a small flash which add on camera Hotshoe then choose Metz, but remember, 580EX got alot of features and you can learn with it in beginning, and if you buy 580EX also buy like a small box which can put over the top head of the flash then you can get very nice great light, believe me, go with 580EX, and later think of studio flashes or lighting. |

The Metx 54 MZ4 blows the canon 580 away.
I have used the Metz for 18 months or so, for fun and for weddings, in eTTL and noe eTTL2 modes, as well as the Metz Auto mode. With and without a LightsphereII. I've tried a 580 as well.
The metz is great, fantastic, accurate and consistent. easy to use. I found the 580 very inconsistent and a bit harder to use (you;d get used to it i suppose).
On the BIG plus side - metz has an auto mode that is fantastic, the main reason people choose this flash. It is tons better than eTTL. eTTL2 is supposed to be lots better than the older eTTL - i have not tested it to be sure how much better yet. Basically for anything except fill flash use the Metz Auto mode.
Outdoors for fill flash eTTL seems to work better. However, Metz seems to have a sensor of some sort in the flash bulb area and I hear you can't use a diffuser on it with eTTL. I have not tested this specifically so I am not sure.
On the metz the 'brains' are in the shoe (the part that attaches to the hot shoe of hte camera - i think metz calls it an adapter foot). For canon you need the 3102. M2 programming for eTTL1 (like you have on the 300D) or for eTTL2 you need the M3 program - Bogen will reprogram the show for FREE. You ship it to them and get it back in a week total (well...east coast is a week). I had this done as I needed program M3 for the 30D. Just got it back yesterday as a matter of fact.
