It has recently come to our attention that a user submitted 5 entries taken outside the challenge dates.
The five challenges which were recalculated, and the former ranking of the entries removed were:
Time Capsule (Challenge 367) - 54th
Complementary Colors II (Challenge 387) - 190th
Collections (Challenge 412) - 32nd
Shallow DOF II (Challenge 423) - 13th
Jump (Challenge 477) - 59th
In addition to these five images, we also discovered that a sixth image, which was previously disqualified for spot editing, also contained falsified EXIF data. Because of this, the entries in question have been disqualified, and the user who submitted them has been permanently banned from DPChallenge.
Situations like this are a rare exception in our overwhelmingly fair and honest community, and we consider it our obligation to you to treat this as a serious matter. We appreciate that nearly all the members of the community respect each other by respecting the rules of our challenges -- it is this fairness and mutual respect that makes DPChallenge a fun and worthwhile place to compete.
Thank you,
DPChallenge Site Council

Dang, Nice detective work. Makes ya wonder why people even bother joining a site like this if they don't want to follow the rules.

Wow...It is a rare thing indeed for something like this to happen. Kudos to the Site Council for apparently dogged detective work. Just one more mostly thankless task. Now we gotta start wheedling the details out... ;0)

Flaunting the rules is risky. You might get away with it once or twice, but you WILL be caught eventually. |

To be honest, we can't be everywhere at once, and the community here does a lot to help keep things honest. A member found evidence of a possible date violation on one entry and brought it to our attention. As we investigated further, we discovered the additional violations.

Wow. That is craziness. Far beyond that level of weirdness is that for the last two days, I had a name kicking around in my head. ALL DAY. I rolled it around and played with the letters, rearranging them and toying with alternate variations in the way our minds often do when otherwise occupied with semi-menial tasks (I did a lot of driving over the last few days).
It was that users name.
Extremely weird. |

Eeeks thats never good.
Maybe he did not understand the language, thus the rules? I dunno...I am not sticking up for him, and SC did an awesome job...just wondering why someone would cheat like that. |

Good job! Cheaters never prosper. How the heck do you change the exif data? Wait, nevermind... I'd rather not know! |

I've looked at the offending photos/profile, and I'm wondering if maybe the photographer possibly had troubles understanding the rules? maybe their english isn't so good?
just a thought.

Any chance I could get the ribboners in 2 sec and Water II to have to verify their EXIF ;-)

We did consider that possibility, but the evidence did not support it. His first DQ came back in September 2005 for a date violation. After that, we requested proof on three of his other entries. He failed to reply on two, and when he realized that wasn't gaining him anything, submitted an entry with falsified EXIF. The fact that he tampered with his EXIF proves that he understood at least the date rule well enough to try to circumvent it.

It seems to always be the good ones that feel the need to cheat.

Making an honest mistake is one thing, any of us could do that, and on an English-language site people whose first language isn't English are doubly vulnerable. But falsifying EXIF data is deliberate cheating - understanding the rules and trying to find a way around them, not an honest mistake. I think SC's choice of action was appropriate.
Yes, people shouldn't be banned lightly, and it's good to give people the benefit of the doubt when there is uncertainty. But this particular case looks pretty definite.
