There is one I know of, who says good picture and then gives 2-4.
It is ok for me if the same person votes for ALL the pictures in a challenge. Skipping some pictures is like giving them the average they already have and therefore for my pictures average of 5.
For those of you who dont use the 1-10 scale, pleace vote on all the pictures or else it is not fair to those you vote for.

Of course it could have been someone else that voted and they were just coming back for comments. Still, I wonder how many actually lie in their comments and more importantly what point does it serve. |
I had this happen to me a couple of challenges ago. Needless to say, the commentor who wasn't a baggie left me a comment that it was an instant fave and the best of the bunch. However, his score didn't reflect that as he gave me a 3 (i'm sorry, i check all the time... i need a life). So like everyone else, I checked his profile and lo and behold, a 3 equates to about a 9 in most people's voting scale ;) |

The vote count goes up by one with each of these comments....but the vote score stays the same.
The first one was around the 24th vote mark...so I am sure that wasn't a late commentor and the second one was around the 110th vote.
What gives? |
I have a theory about this but need to have a question answered to test it:
Does the total number of votes you have decrease/increase after scores are recalculated at the end of the challenge?
I've always heard that the slight change in your average that happens right at the end is due to removal of the votes from those who failed to vote 20% and individual scorer anomalies. I've never watched scores closely enough to know but I'd guess that the close watching vote trackers among you do.

My scores do change at the end of voting. They have gone up and down in score and have noticed up to 34 votes dropped for the final tally. Hope that helps.

As a statistician I have to say that Judi is right to be concerned about this. If the number of votes increases from 87 to 88, the average can stay the same only if (1) the new vote is exactly the same as the previous average, or (2) old votes have been changed at the same time so that the new vote exactly cancels out the changes. Number (1) is impossible if the previous average is not an integer because votes can only be integers (whole numbers). Number (2) is extremely unlikely. If this kind of thing is really happening, it ought to be brought to the attention of the site managers.
There is one possible explanation for this. DPC is a database-driven site. Everything that appears on a page is the result of a database query. I think that the most likely explanation of the anomaly observed by Judi is that the average was based on a query made before the new vote was recorded and the number of votes was based on a later query after the new vote was recorded. If this is the case, we don't need to worry about it--the correct results will soon appear.

As a web programmer I have to say that Judi should not be concerned. Calculations of "real-time" data from a constantly changing networked database tend to be a little screwy. When the voting is over and the data is finalized, the results are bound to be more dependable.

Understood about the score changing, even I am aware of that... but my question is does the total number of votes change as well?

I would agree with this assessment for a dynamically updated online system like this, particularly if it is a distributed database. That is not unlike how banking ATM numbers may not be always correct because all the trasactions into the system have not yet been fully processed.
One thing for sure, at the end when scores are recalculated the numbers all work out consistently.
