as for me, I'd go with the D200.
There's a guy selling a whole D70 package deal at Fredmiranda.com.
$950 for a d70 a 50mm, 18-70, 70-300, Slick tripod, and some other stuff.
Or you can get the D70 body for $500 I think he said.

| I wouldn’t call 18-200 VR better lens versus 50mm 1.8, but D200 much better camera than D70. I would go for D200 with the prime lens. |

I usually always recommend that you buy the best lens you can because lens technology moves much slower and you will use good glass longer than a camera body.
However...I am not a big fan of the 18-200 VR. The rule of thumb for Zooms is don't buy a Zoom that has a multiplier larger than 3X. The softness and speed issues with large Zooms detract from their convenience. Take the VR away from the 18-200 and the lens is average at best.
I would actually suggest a D70 with the 17-55DX lens. The 17-55 is incredibly fast at 2.8...sharp at both ends, has perfect color, offers almost the perfect range for the majority of photo applications and is very light for its size. Plus wyou will use it for many, many years to come.
We have several D70's as back-ups at our studio that we have assistants use when we go shoot events and need good all around shots. |
