I just spent $300 for a lens. For many of you that might not be extreme but it is the most I've spent yet for a lens.

It's also the first time I've bought used (crossing my fingers!), and the most I've spent for one item on eBay.

This is the lens (except it's for Minolta):
Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Macro
edit - actually it's this one (the link above has the wrong lens photo displayed, it's not the newer Di):
Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Macro

I had originally ordered a new Sigma EX DG 50mm Macro but it ended up being backordered with no firm delivery date so I cancelled it.

Hopefully I made the right decision for $40 more? ;^)

Awright Barry! Don't worry, that twinge of guilt passes quickly, and then you'll enjoy having the lens around from now on :) Now for a macro challenge eh?

I think you easily made the right decision. The 90mm will give you much more room to breathe (and your subjects) if you choose to shoot things that are alive. This will also help you no end for lighting concerns. 90-105mm macro lenses are superb.

If you haven't already, I would grab the KM 50mm f/1.7. It's another fantastic lens that is available for cheap. It will give you increased macro ability using reversed lens techniques. Check the tutorials section for dudephil's new 'reversed lens' tutorial.

The 50mm f/1.8 Canon equivalent hasn't left my camera much since I got it. Fine results. You might really like what you can do with it, especially with kids...

Thanks Ray. See you in about 3 weeks - hopefully I'll have put it to good use by then! ;^)

I recently got the same lens (also purchased on eBay) and have been quite happy with it! Yes, it's not on the DPC lens list so I just selected the Di version, but maybe we should get them to add it to the list?
