Today, my Tamron 28-75 2.8 arrived. (YAY!) I'm testing it out on my film camera (Canon Elan II), as I don't have the 30D yet, but will be purchasing one hopefully in the next month or so.
Anyway, I've noticed something about it that I'm not sure is a defect or a "feature", since I've never used this lens before. When I'm zooming out, at around 55mm the feeling of the zoom changes. It feels a bit "looser", for lack of a better term, or like whatever mechanism does the zooming out is slipping. As a result, the zoom seems to need to turn more to go the same distance. It does zoom out through the whole focal range, so that's why I'm thinking this may be a feature, perhaps so that one can make more subtle adjustments to the amount of zooming when near the far end of the zoom? Does this make sense? Or am I making up excuses for a defective lens?
Otherwise, I'm quite happy with the feel of it. I haven't had a chance to shoot more than a few shots with it, but hopefully tomorrow I'll finish off the roll and get it developed. I really hope it's not defective. I can see myself quite enjoying this lens. :)

gentle *bump* since I'm kinda worried...
Anyone know if the lens should feel this way? |

I got mine a few weeks ago, and I don't have this issue. Mine zooms harder than any other lens I have - well, perhaps not hard, but firm. There is certainly no feeling even close to slippage, and it takes the same amount of turn to zoom from one end to the other. I fear that you may indeed have a problem.
Contact whatever store you got it from and tell them its defective, they'll probably replace it for you, especially this new. But if you do have to get a new one, you're gonna' love it! The shots are awesome!

I have had mine for several months. There is some difference in zoom feel depending upon your angle of zoom because the lens has an external zoom mechanism. If you hold the lens in your hand (no camera) and hold the lens facing upward you will notice that zooming out is tighter than zooming back in and when holding the lens downward zooming out is looser and zooming in (28mm) it's tighter.
So depending upon the angle you hold the lens in relation to gravity causes the zoom to be a bit tighter or looser. Say you are holding the lens at a 45 deg upward angle the lens will feel looser at the 28mm end of the lens and tighten up as you zoom in to 75mm. I believe it is due to gravity because the external zoom mechanism not an internal so the weight of the external lens plays a part in the zoom feel. But not enough to pose a problem. But you can tell the difference if you compare it to an internal zoom mechanism.
Hope that makes sense.

Thanks, Brent and Scott.
Yes, the feel of the zoom does change depending on the angle I'm holding it at. It seems to get that slightly slippery feeling when it's angled ever so slightly downward. It's a lot stronger if I point it to the floor.
So I think the lens is probably fine. Just to make sure, though, I think I'll head over to a local camera place and try out their lens (I bought this thing online from buydig.com because they had a great deal on it. It's $310 after the $30 rebate). And while I'm there, I think I'll drool over a 30D. Although that might be torturing myself too much at this point, as I've been spending a lot of money lately and really should get caught up a bit first. :) So, we'll see.
Thanks much, guys! I appreciate the advice.
