Should I get the 17-40 f4 L or 10-22 f3.5 EF-S with my new 30D?
I will use it for landscape and distorted portaiture (a style I like).
They are the same price (almost), so that's not a factor. |

Personally, I would say get the 17-40 as not only is it an AMAZING lens, but I think that it is more versatile. Honestly though, it completely depends on what you think you are going to shoot more of though.
As for a dealer, you can't really beat B&H in terms of quality and price.

The 17-40 is too long on a 1.6x crop for wide landscape (unless you stitch) and similarly it does not have that distortion between near and far subjects like you might expect unless it is on a full frame sensor.
For what you are into, the 10-22mm sounds like the much more compatible choice to your style.
I received my 10-22mm today and am already quite amazed with it. Basically it feels like my 17-40mm when that lens is mounted on my film cameras, the only ones I have that are "full frame" so to speak. And that is a wonderful sight - at 10mm the sweeping view is really something. I wish I had gotten off the fence and bought this lens sooner.
In all likelihood I will sell the 17-40mm unless I decide to hold onto it for a future full frame digital SLR down the road. I have a 24-70mm F/2.8, so the 10-22mm is an excellent complement in terms of filling the focal range below it. I have a feeling the 17-40mm will be sitting idle a lot. |

I'll second Rich's views. The 10-22 is roughly equivalent to the view from a 16-35mm.
It's pretty funkalicious. I just helped my friend to buy one on the same day I got my camera and it's seriously nice in every way.
If you want to get something a bit longer, you can add the very affordable Tamron 28-75 and get a nice complement as well without breaking the bank.
That's the combo I will be going for once my wallet recovers... |
