As far as I'm concerned, the trackball is the worst possible device for photo editing....

Okay - All this talk has me thinking......
I was looking to buy one anyway BUT I have never used a tablet, so not sure what to expect. I was thinking about getting the more expensive larger model but am tempted to get the $60 4x5 version to see how I like using it before laying out yet more $ for stuff I could hate - I could certainly not use the potential for a while.
For those that have theirs in hand - How do you find the smaller 4x5 surface in the larger footprint (8x8 or something)? How do you find the depth sensitivity (512 different pressures) of this model? |

Ok, well in all honesty, I actually upgraded to the Intuos 4x5 rather than the Graphire because I had the same concerns as you. Mostly because I knew I would be using it a lot and I read that the pen was much better with the Intous... not sure I would be able to tell a difference at this point. However in terms of 4x5 I can tell you that you definitely will not need to go much bigger if any. I already have to use substantial arm movement just to cover the surface areas now and can't even imagine having a bigger one. In fact I think I would like it a lot less if it was a bigger size.

Jason,
Perhaps this has something to do with yours being a newer model, but on my 4x5 Intuos, I can cover the whole screen just by using my wrist. (OK, maybe just a little arm movement to get into the corners, but seriously, it's very minimal.) If this is annoying you (I know it would annoy me - that's why I don't use a 6x8), perhaps you can tweak some of the settings to get it to cover the range? I have pretty small hands, too, so I'm really surprised to hear that someone is having this problem.

I've got the 4x5 Graphire and I LOVE IT! It's the best thing for editing ever!!! For me, the 512 is certainly sensitive enough. I don't draw with it, just use it for photo editing and I find that it's more than plenty sensitive. And I agree with the others about the size too....initially I was worried the 4x5 would be too small, but it's not! It's a perfect size and it's great with my laptop cause it's small enough I can use it alongside my laptop wherever I am. Certainly enough room I would think, unless you're using it to draw large scale pictures with lots of detail or doing some serious graphic design work. |

Blast you all who ordered before me!
I had the Blue one in my cart half the day while shopping for other stuff. Went to check out and it was gone. Huh? Double check that. You've got to be kidding me?!? The dreaded Out-of Stock!
Okay, white it is... LOL.

Got an email that mine shipped today. So maybe, if UPS is very good to me, I'll have it by Friday. Woo hoo! And sorry, Eug, but I got a blue one - don't think it was the last one, but you never know.
Cindi, send B&H this thread - see if you can a credit or two. :-) |

After scratching around on a bit of 4 x 5 ruled up paper, I figured the 4x5 will be ok for me to start. I prefer the idea of the bigger bluetooth ones but they are out of my league to justify right now - maybe if I start using this one a lot I will see about an "upgrade". I went for the white also - please select 1 of the following 1 options :-)

Oh, I did. I needed some long glass for my trip to Kenya in October. Figured it might as well be now, because I'll need to get used to the differences. |

My 'monster' arrived today. straight out of the box and installed in seconds (well, about 300). After a lot of humming and harring I went for the Wacom Intuos3 A4 USB - its a monster.
First impressions are although its all new to me I reckon soon I'll be doing all my CS work and many other tasks with it. The mouse that came with it is cool but I keep finding myself with a mouse in each hand! Its also got 2 scroll pads and 8 programable function keys (another steep learning curve for me).
Its sooo big (an A3 card doesn't cover it all) the keyboard is back in its drawer and only comes out for typing.
Back to bread and water for another month!

And it's BLUE, which matches my monitor!

Nice... I only have the 4 function keys, but am really glad that I got them. When using photoshop I never realized how many time you need to hold either the shift or alt keys and having them on the tablet is really handy (and the quick zoom scroll pad is real nice too). As for the mouse, I unplugged my old one so I wouldn't run into that problem. Really no need for 2 anyway. How are you finding the larger size?
Good luck with it.
edit to add: The function keys are handy when you want to kick back and put the tablet on your lap away from the keyboard, but the jury is still out as to whether they are worth the extra coin.

Its definately a whole new learning curve Jason. I've only had it an hour or so and whilst I do find I have to move my arm (more than the bare minimum) I reckon the added size will definately be a plus.
As for the function keys/scroll pads, over time I'll probably redefine the right 4 to my most used functions and leave the left 4 as standard. Something else I have just found is that I can program keys/pens/mouse to different settings depending on the application I'm using, now all I need is handwriting to type converter and/or a monitor keyboard ;)

Well, it's here, it's installed (piece of cake) and it's running. I've only got one problem; I'm used to running my brushes, erasers and such in PS so they display the actual diameter, and this tablet is defaulting to "precise", the crosshair, even though the PS preferences are set to "actual diameter". Any ideas?

Doesn't Caps Lock toggle between the two? |

Bingo. LOL. Caps lock was actually on, and I had to turn it off when I started typing the previous message. Major "DUH", I knew that. I went into "overcomplication drive mode", assuming the fault was with a setting in the new hardware.
Gracias.

LOL. I only thought of that because it's happened to me about 20 times... I frantically search all over the place to try and fix it, and about 10 minutes later it hits me... doh. |

Brown Truck site tells me => " 7:13 A.M. OUT FOR DELIVERY". Ordered Monday evening, delivered today, not a bad effort considering I picked 3-5day shipping.
Looks like I get to open a toy when I get home :-)) |

I have 6x8 with function keys on left and right. They are great. I kept the once on the left as defaults but changed the once on the right. I programmed [ ] and F on the right side.
First time users remember: there is a learning curve. It took me few days to get comfortable with it. However once you learn you cannot go back to paining with the mouse.

Huh? Delivery notice says 4/27, but UPS says it's on the truck for delivery. Woo-hoo! I guess I WON'T go shooting until after the UPS truck shows. |
