My boss is asking me questions about the Canon 20 D. Me being a Nikon owner, I am not as well informed about Canon products.
First is the 20 D a full frame sensor or is there still a crop factor.
Second what designations do I need to know to figure out the the difference between Canon lenses?
Thanks |

20 is a cropped sensor, the 5D and MarkII are ful-frame. Canon lenses for the EOS line (dSLRs) mostly begin with EF or EFS and the designation "L" after the lens size indicates their best quality lenses (and priciest).

One easy way here at DPC is go to the Equipment pulldown then look under cameras and lenses. From there you can get prices, reviews and specs. Good luck. AND no it is not a full size sensor, the 5D is. "L" lenses are Canon top of the line lenses.
Try to stay away from EFS lenses if you think you may upgrade to a better camera later such as full sensor. EFS are more designed for cropped sensor use.

The 20D has a 1.6 crop factor, so a 100mm turns into a 160mm. For full-frame, the next model up would be the 5D.
Lenses- "EF" lenses will work on any Canon "EOS" camera, basically any Canon SLR in the market today. "EF-S" will only work on the Rebels, the 20D and the 30D. Lenses with an "L" in their name are more professional lenses, and thus, more expensive. |

The 20D has a 1.6 crop sensor. With lenses, anything "L"-designated is pro quality. USM lenses have a faster, quieter, motor for focusing. It is a great camera, but the brand-new 30D has replaced it; its a new camera, but basically an improved version of the 20D. And its a Canon, so it rocks ;-D
Cheers, hop this helps.

EF (lines up with the Red dot) is stanard canon mount film/Digital Slr
EFS (lines up with white dot on body) is Canons made for digital lens...lens goes further into body closer to the sensor.
As others pointed out "L" is the shiznit... |

The 20D is an old model. The 30D is the current one, replaced the 20D about 2 months ago.
Same sensor but more software features (spot meter, high and low speed drive modes, bigger LCD on the back, longer battery life (i've heard up to 1700 shots!) and more i suppose - i just use them, i don't sell them)
USM - also allows you to manully focus without flipping the AF/MF switch
EF-S lenses only fit the 300D, 350XT, 20D and 30D. teh EF lense fit all canon cameras.

I just got my first EF-S lens (10-22mm) a couple weeks ago, and thought it was a little tricky mounting it on the camera but didn't think much about it. That explains it. Thanks! |

Just to clarify, not all USM lenses allow you to tweak the focus manually in AF mode. |
