We live in Colorado Springs, but I'm working outside of Washington DC for a few months. We went to DC to get some good bridge shots yesterday. We have three small kids and they fell asleep in the car. My wife would let me out at an intersection and I would run ahead of the backed up traffic to get some shots and she would pick me up again.
I had to run through an underground tunnel once which was kind of crazy. I'm not sure if pedestrians are allowed in there.
Then she dropped me off several blocks from the Potomac River, just behind the Lincoln Memorial. There are two bridges there that have some amazing sculptures near the start of the bridge. My understanding is that they were a gift to the US from another country.
Tracy got stuck in traffic, then made a wrong turn, then got lost.
I got my shots of the bridge, then waited for her to pick me up. ...and waited, and waited, and waited. Then I ran two blocks back to where she dropped me off, and traced the route she would have taken, no luck. I realized my cell phone was in the car with her. (She had tried to call me on her phone, only to hear it ringing in the car). I finally asked a stranger if I could use her cell phone. I must have seemed nice (and not like some weirdo) because she said it was in her car. She took me to her car and let me call Tracy. Tracy was somewhere in Virginia by that time, a very long way from where I was. We agreed for her to pick me up on Constitution, across from the Lincoln Memorial. Some time later, when it was completely dark, I finally got back in our car!
The crazy things we do to get shots for these challenges!
Anybody else have an interesting story?
(By the way, I'm not using the sculpture shots from the DC bridges, so I'm not giving away my entry with this post)

LOL.
My wimpy truck got stuck on a muddy hill in the middle of BFE while I was trying to get my shot. I ended up (thankfully) getting free and backing down the hill, backwards across the bridge I'd just shot, and backwards about another 1/2 mile before I found a place where I could turn around.
I wasn't worried about getting stuck in the middle of nowhere so much as I was worried about not being able to upload my images in time. :)

What a story! I feel bad for you but your wife must have been frantic, thinking she might never see her loving husband again! It's a lovely shot you took while you were waiting. Good thing your batteries lasted that long:). I often drive through the most amazing tunnels and over bridges but I can never find a place to stop to photograph them. Some times I think about buying those orange cones and surrounding myself and my tripod with them so I can be in the middle of the road where I need to be for the perfect shot. Alas, I come to my senses and let go that idiotic notion.
I wrote my bridge story on another thread but, in short, I didn't get my photo because once I stopped, I tripped and fell on a gravel path and hobbled back to my car and went home.:( |

If you did surround yourself in orange cones while taking a photograph, you could also hang a white card around your neck with PRESS written on it. I've thought of doing that myself on many occassions.
Anthony.

Scary, it's good that you used your quick thinking.
My own story was not so traumatic. I know which bridge I wanted to shoot but when I got to it on Sunday there was a big group of fishermen (very friendly) from a local fishing club perching every 20 meters on the banks of the river. So whenever I tried to take a photo someone tried to talk to me.
In the course of the afternoon, I was introduced to the maggots (red bait and bronze bait - apparently they taste different to the fish - bred somewhere on the farm in Midlands (UK)), shown how to use a catapult that throws some worms into the river and learned how to weigh the spoon-bait with lead thingies.
