I have a 580ex that I used for the first time while shooting for the Portrait challenge. I had a huge problem with how quickly it would recharge before I could flash again. I started with fresh batteries, and had to change them twice, during a relatively short photo shoot (I was working with a 2 year old Ü). The light was taking close to a minute to recharge. Is this normal? Are there special batteries I should be using?

No, I'd say something is not right there. What kind of batteries are you using? I use Energizer 2500 mah rechargables, and at a full dump I'm thinking it would take just a few seconds to recycle (I've never actually timed it).

Normal recycle time for the 580EX is no where near a minute. Depending on settings, it should be in a range of about 2 to 5 seconds.

At least in Nikon flashes, rechargable batteries recycle much faster than regular batteries. Are you using rechargables? I would definately recomend 2500mah (I use Duracell and Energizer (Kodak makes some decent ones too).

Definitely something up with that. I used to have a Sigma 500 flash and thought it was fast enough. The 580 is much quicker. Unless you're dumping full charge, it should be ready again almost straight away. As the others have said, do make sure that you are using a set of rechargeable batteries, they can deliver higher currents than alkalines.

Thanks!! I just tried it with rechargeable batteries, and the recycle is about 3 seconds. I guess I had a bum batch of AA's before. I wish I would have taken the time to find my recharger during the challenge, because I'm sure one of the shots I missed while waiting for my flash to recharge would have ribboned. Ü
