yeah that would be good for unmodified images ... but once any post happens that signature is lost

Moderate changes to an image will probably still allow the technique to be used. Some cropping, moderate levels or curves adjustment, moderate sharpening all would probably be possible to work around.
More severe edits would certainly be problematic. I'd venture a guess to say the vast majority of photos taken are never edited at all, or at most have very basic editing done.

It doesn't matter, if you printed the picture at home you already have a unseen "fingerprint" left by the printer that the FBI can analyse anyway...

Simple way to get around any trouble. Don't take any shots that can get you into trouble.
