I was at a wedding this weekend and was surprised to see the photographers using D70s'. I've been making the very hard decision lately of what my first DSLR is going to be. I've been looking very hard at the D50 mainly because of the low price of it. But I recently made the mistake of picking up a 30d and played with that. Of course I want the 30d but the price is keeping me away kind of. Ok my question is. If the Nikon D70s is good enough for a pro photographer than it should be good enough for me right? The difference is that I don't do many "people" photos. Mainly landscapes and animals. What do you think?

you had nice camera, just buy a lens Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM and you will be professional portrait photographer, or buy fixed focal length like 50mm or 85mm and that is more than enough in portrait.
don't worry about D70s, it is great camera, but canon i think better and you will find that, just maybe they are working in one group so they all bought D70s, but don't doubt about canon cameras because it is great company for DSLR cameras

I forgot to add that 24-70 is good for landscape in some ways, about animals it is great also if you are very close to the animals, and you can do macro with it if you can buy an extension tube, i think this lens is great for general photography, just keep you r budget for lenses and don't move to another brand of cameras

It's all about what feels good in your hands. If your not comfortable with your hardware, you probably won't get good results. I went with the D50 myself (in January) with the intention of slowly buying lenses and then in two to three years upgrading the body.

Edit to add: If you look at my images from the NYC GTG 2006 (here), you'll note that I don't focus on people too much, but I do have a few...

Hey A4,
UAE is right, the Canon is an awesome product. However, don't ignore the Nikon cameras. There is a reason that Nikon dominates certain photography industries. I guess it all depends on what you're after. There really isn't a difference in quality between the canon or nikon cameras. (if anything, from what I've read, the nikon users appear to have a few less problems and require less service on their camera) Canon dominates the sports photography business. Nikon dominates movie stars (hollywood). Canon has the edge on consumer dSLRs and photogs that just shoot everything. Nikon appears to dominate the National Geographic photogs.

So, with all of that said, you are comparing Coke to Pepsi, Ford to Chevy, Apple to IBM. Go with the one you want and you like the best and don't worry that you made the wrong decision, because what ever you choose, you didn't make the wrong decision.

Yeah, I know. I like the way both the D50 and the 30d feel. They're both solid cameras. I absolutely hate the 350XT. The grip is smaller than on my G6.

Thanks Jahoward. Yeah, I know there really isn't much if any difference between Nikon and Canon. I just don't know if the 30d is worth the price difference to a D50. I know they're not in the same league per say but they are the cameras that I've decided to look at. I know the 350XT is more in the league of the D50 but I can't deal with the hand grip and cheap plastic body of it.

That's also one of the reasons that I went with the Nikon line. The body felt more solid.

I took more than 10000 pics with my 350XT and i never complaint of body, camera is not only body, it is features inside the body, just if you are worry about the body then buy a cover to protect your any plastic body, hehe, and about grip i never think of that when i shooted pics, but anyway, i am thinking to upgrade to 1Ds mark II sooner or later, and i think you know this camera

I don't doubt the 350XT is a good camera. It's just not a comfortable camera for me to use. I think Canon messed up making the grip so tiny.

I think that it also depends on what format you want to shoot in. If you shoot only JPEG, I've heard (and seen) that the D50 is one of the best straight-to-jpeg DSLRs, even better than the D70/s. I've heard that it does well compared to the comparable Canons too, but I can't confirm that. Like someone said earlier, I don't think that you'll go wrong no matter what your choice. Good luck!

Listen, buy what you like and don't worry about others,
i planned to buy 1Ds mark 2 whatever it is even some people told me that Nikon D2X is better or 5D much cheaper and so on, i will buy what i like and i feel i am comfortable with and i don't care of people.

You got me all wrong. I could care less what other people like. I just want to make the best decision when buying a DSLR. This is a big purchase to me and I want to make the right decision the first time.

I debated the D50 vs. the D70 and went with the D50. My friend has the D70 and they basically take the exact same quality pictures. If you plan on using the multiple wireless speedlight flash system then go with the D70. It has a built in controller for wireless speedlights. I had to buy the SB800 flash which acts as a controller for other slave flashes. Cost was like $289 vs. the cheaper SB600 for $189.

Seriously, how many threads are you going to create on this EXACT topic. You already decided on the 30d just two weeks ago inTHIS THREAD, so why are we reading all this again? Just keep your G6. Its take some fantastic shots on this site. It will be just fine. Now go spend some time taking photos and a bit less time posting the same question.

Yeah maybe I should just get the D50 and call it a day. I take really great photos with my G6 so having the D50 would only mean better photos.

Just stick to ONE THREAD. Your incessant questioning is clogging up everyone's home page. You have all the information you could possibly have at this point. Search the old threads, INCLUDING THE ONES YOU HAVE STARTED, if you need more information. Everything you are asking has already been said. Enough is enough. Just keep your G6. Its take some fantastic shots on this site. It will be just fine. Now go spend some time taking photos and a LOT less time posting the same freaking question.

Right, I try with you to keep Canon but you still want to go for Nikon. Nikon is great but that doesn't mean that you have to choose only Nikon, if you love it get marry with her, and you said that you saw alot of people got Nikon D70 in wedding and you are not into people photos that much, so why you waste time by asking people about cameras, i didn't ask people what camera i should take that much because i can read features from websites and then i cn decide without people opinions because everyone has his own thinking. So let's say ignore all the people, which camera you are dreaming of? and if you really need best camera then forget D70 and 350XT and 20D, just think about 5D, 1D series, D200 and D2X, save money and buy the best, this is my philosophy. Good luck in finding what you are looking for.

I thought this guy already decided on a 30D? At least that is what 5 of his posts say!

Honestly, if you are this worried about spending money on a camera, just wait until you have to start buying lenses, tripods, bags, filters, flashes, lighting.....

Uggghhh...

I know alot of you guys might have all this money to run out and buy the newest greatest thing. I don't at all. This is a huge decision for me and I only want to gather as much information as possible before taking the plunge. This forum offers tons of information and I've learned alot on here. This is the reason for me making several different posts about DSLRs. If you don't want to hear any of my questions then you have the right to not click on any of my posts. I didn't ask specifically for any responses from YOU so just relax yourself.

The point is, you can do it all in ONE THREAD. I am not overrun with money either. I eat ramen noodles twice a day so I can support my photo habit. Search the previous threads. The questions have been answered.
