I'm switching to Canon and need to know a little about which camera I should get. I'll need fast burst rate for sports and high speed photojournalism. I've looked on E-Bay but it's not a great source for info just pricing. Can somebody lend a little advice on Canon for me. I looked at the Mark II but it didn't seem to have much for burst rate. Did I miss something? Thanks for any help.

Warning: This is a completely selfish post.

When do you plan on switching and will you be selling. If so, how much?

Will 5fps do it for you, or do you need 8.5fps? If 5fps then I'd recommend the new Canon 30D. For a faster frame rate, I'd go with the Canon 1D Mark II N.

If fps didn't matter, then my personal favorite is the 5D. But it's not a great sports shooter.

I have the 1DMKII and the reason I bought it (I had a D30 then a 10D) is I needed something that had fast frames per second, had fast auto focus, a large buffer and was pretty much bullet proof.

The 1DMKII can shoot at 8.5 frames per second for 21 shots in raw or 8.5 fps pretty much until you fill up the CF card in jpeg.

It's autofocus is the fastest I've every had... I've done a lot of high speed action shots with it and it's great. Many people use it for bird photography and sports.

The 1DMKIIn is out now but I'm not familar with the differences between it and the 1DMKII. The 1D Mark II that might not have the fast frames is the 1Ds Mark II. That only does about 3 frames per second but has a lot more resolution. It's moe of a portrait and wedding camera rather than a sports camera.

The only thing I'm not happy about with the 1DMKII is that most of the functions require two hands. To open the CF door, to take out the battery, to access the menu, etc., it takes 2 hands where I could do most of that with one or two fingers on the same hand with my 10D. I don't know what Canon was thinking, although they said it was to keep "Professionals" from accidently changing settings. I don't know what clumsy photographers complained to Canon about accidently changing settings, but I think it is a bad design. But I love everything else about it.

There's another fun thing about the 1d MK II. It has dual card slots.

I don't know if it's important to you, but you can load that puppy with an 8gb CF AND a 4gb SD. Yum. I think you have to switch, but there's some convenience there. No fishing around in your bag for that extra CF while the actions happening.

SD cards are also faster, so may help with read/write speed on 8.5FPS mode.

The 1dMK II is basically my dream camera (of cameras that actually exist), so I couldn't recommend it more highly. If it has the same AF as the EOS 1n, it's probably seriously amazing in that department.

The business probably decided to switch because many of their staffers use Canon and have requested their lenses, plus Canon lenses do tend to be a bit cheaper on the top end.

The differences between the II and the IIn are minimal. You can find them at dpreview.com.

Oh and watch out for the little 's' after the 1D. It's a small letter, but a big difference in cameras.

The 30D rocks, but I feel that you will probably expect the performance of the 1D. The 30D performance is fine for my hobby purposes, but I doubt that will be true for you.

The reason I am changing is because the paper is changing and if I want to continue to be on the same page I need to switch. It will come down to equipment eventually when I need to use their lens for an assignment and I have Nikon ....OOOOPS I also am ready to upgrade from my D70 and go to something VERY fast and the D200 just isn't where I want to be. I need to be in the 8 FPS burst rate to be able to compete in my field. I am scraping by right now with a lot of luck. I know the sports and when to shoot so the speed factor isn't an issue but how long will this lucky streak last. Eventually I will need the speed so that is why I am moving.

Eschelar, I don't know why Canon didn't make it so that when one card filled up the camera would automatically switch to the other one, but they didn't. There is one fast way to switch cards that I have used rather than have to go through the menu and make the switch. When the one you are using fills up, pull it out. This causes the camera to use the only other card in the camera. It's a lot faster to pop the door, pull the full card out, close the door and continue shooting than it is to go through the menu and switch the default card selection. I've used this trick a number of times. Then when I get a break I'll put another empty card in. It will switch back to the newly inserted card, since that is set as the default, but thats ok with me.
