Four more Canadian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan yesterday. One of them, Bombardier Myles Mansell, was a friend of my daughter's. She came home from work today in tears and all she could say was, "Myles is dead..." I could only say, "No... no..." as I held her and my own tears came.
Rest in peace, Myles; you served your country honourably...

Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh -- Falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky.
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
Then good night, peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear -- Friend, good night.

Thank you... RMeyers, that brought the tears again. My daughter (who has recently joined DPC as Becky-Lee) and I went to the beach this evening, taking shots at the bird sanctuary. We had a soothing, peaceful time then stopped at the supermarket on the way home to pick up a newspaper. Seeing Myle's picture covering half the front page brought the tears afresh, and she stood sobbing at the checkout. My heart aches for her; she's such a big-hearted soul :(
Thank you, DPC'ers, for your kindness. |

I have been to a military funeral for a friend of my wifes. I do not know if they play taps at these events in Canada but it was the most gut wrenching feeling when the bugles played followed by the riflemans salute. Me and mine are thinking of you and yours both for your loss and thankful for the support your loved one showed to a greater cause...
Edit: My son asked me to add this photo. He shot it himself when my brother was stationed in Iraq. I think it fits my families sentiments at this time.

I'm at a loss for words. It's just so sad to hear things like this.
My best wishes to all his family and friends.

The funeral is tomorrow but I'm not sure if we can handle it. We went to the viewing today so that she could have some private time with him, to say goodbye in her own way. She gave the casket a hug, because she said Myles always gave the best hugs, and now he needed one.... then after the shot I posted she kissed him goodbye.
Ron, thank your son for me. The flag may be different, but the men behind it are the same. I was very touched by the shot, and by the thought. Thank you all. |
