I recently started looking at Tablets as an addition to my PC. They are advertised to help with digital photography through Photoshop as an editing tool. I thought they might help because you use a pen instead of a mouse. Has anyone had any experience or knowledge of these?

I bought one some weeks ago and definitely YES. It helps a lot for editing. Mainly to make selections more acurately and faster. Go for it!!

| It's lika an electronic pad of paper. Instead of using a mouse you can use a pen to write. Seems like it would be a lot easier to use than trying to draw or trace things with a mouse. |

A tablet gives you finer control of editing, although I understand there is a bit of a 'training' period while one adjusts to the differences between mousing and tableting. I've been eyeing one for a while and make the plunge soon.
Since you have better control of the pen it's good for those that suffer from computer related injuries like carpal tunnel and tendonitis. |

Thanks! That might have to be my next purchase. My wrists are aching (I use both hands to mouse so when one starts hurting I can switch) as I have just finished with my window entry.

I must be the odd man out then. I bought a tablet several months ago and I just can't seem to use it right. I find it very hard to work with and the fact that I have to move it just off the surface to move the cursor is annoying. Maybe it's just my tablet, who knows, but I really don't see the usefulness of it. BTW, I have a Wacom Graphire 3.

| These are most useful for retouching with the Clone/Heal tools, and for painting masks/alpha channels. The typical Wacom tablet comes with its own cordless mouse for performing more "normal" operations when you want to. |

Well I just got my new wacom graphire tablet and I love it. I got it for the purpose of digital drawing/painting and not editing, but it works great for both. Personally, I wouldn't have spent the money if it was just for the editing, but that's just me. Many compare the tablet to drawing with a pen as opposed to drawing with a bar of soap ;-)

If your wrists are hurting from using a mouse you might consider a trackball. They to take a bit of getting use to, but are much more comfortable than a mouse. They come in two varieties though, thumb or finger. Which one works best for you is a matter of taste. One downside though is that while they are more comfortable to use, there can be a bit less control in fine movements occasionally.

busted post...oh well I should have read the whole thread first. I was saw tablet. However, editing photos on the tablet pc is very similar to using a graphics tablet but in my opinoin better - you draw directly on the photo on the screen with the pen instead of translating through the graphic tablet.
