In the original song the guy looking for the ribbon on the oak tree wasn't a soldier; I think you can gather from the gist of the song that he's been in prison. The yellow ribbon (the hundred yellow ribbons, as it turned out) was/were just going to be a signal from her to him that she wanted him to come home to her. So, I think the point of the yellow ribbons as a sign of support for troops (which I think were a new thing in the first Gulf War? but I could be totally off on that) had to do with wanting them to come home safely. Interesting that the color yellow was chosen, with its other connotations, though, you're right.
