This is what I did using your method. I wasn't super careful with the selection. This was just a quick test. A bit too dark perhaps, or too contrasty?

Too dark/contrasty? I don't think so. And even though you weren't picky with the selection, it's not terribly obvious where the transition is, and the small reminders that are there would be fixable or avoidable with a little more time/work. Nice job!
As for the other one, I love the sky. I'd like more interest in the foreground... ideally, if this had been taken from much closer to the pyramid, I think it would be a much better composition. The current composition might very well play better at higher resolution, where detail in the pyramid is much clearer.
