We took our kids up to the school to play and as we were about to move to the other playground this little guy popped his head out of the drain pipe. I got to spend about 15 minutes watching. Of the 200-odd resulting photos these are some of my favorites.

Nice shots! I like the one with the fox poking its head out of the hole best. |

Right place, right time. The fox with his head stiking out of the storm drain is great. The claritiy is fantastic.

What a cute lil fox. You have to be happy to have been there at the right time. Thanks for sharing!

Wow thanks for the comments everyone. Sorry about the goofy post. I just hope noting bad happens with him being so close to the school. |

Nice work Erin. He looks like a young one, kinda small. If you don't want him hanging around the school make sure there is no food for him there. I doubt he'll bother the kids unless he is cornered or threatened in some way. But the smartest thing would be to keep them away from him until he moves on. Easier said than done, lol.

I doubt the school even knows about him, but he seems to have adopted the drain pipe as a "den". We were there very late, almost 8pm. So it is likely that being nocturnal no one ever sees him. He is able to go several feet back in the pipe & well out of reach. I plan to go again in a few nights to see if he is still around. |

Here's a question - why is there an open drain pipe in a school playground? Does that seem safe? |

Erin - Good thing you had your camera with you! Very cool getting these shots. I would have been a tad bit nervous at first with the kids so close - in our area foxes are a prime carrier of rabies and it's unusual to see one close to people in daylight. Considering the circumstances, it's obvious this scenario is nothing but a happy moment that the kids will surely remember for a long time! ;^)
We live in the country and see foxes once in a while, sometimes in our horse pasture. This past week we've seen a fox 3 times, usually at dusk. I'm tempted to buy a distress call to draw one of the foxes in closer while I go "hunting" with my camera. Set up a camouflage blind, etc... |

It looks like a culvert, which is just a big pipe to provide a path for water under a driveway or road.
Great captures! Red foxes are very inquisitive. We had one hanging around our house a couple years ago. Some winter mornings we'd see him playing in the yard, or just sitting in the driveway watching people. Once when our son was playing in the yard with friends, the fox sat watching 10 feet away!

He seemed more comfortable with the kids than with me but only came all the way out when they had gone. We have seen foxes before, there is a field that runs from the school all the way to our house so we have seen them cut through the yard from time to time. This little guy was mostly interested in munching what was left of his mouse. |

My family went again over the weekend and didn't see him so it is possible he has moved on from the school. YAY.
