Now therein lies the problem that I think the SC are trying to avoid. First off let me say that I agree that harshness abounds there. It starts at the top and just trickles down. Now here's where I have a dilemma with your post above. You marked the TD critique unhelpful because it was the exact opposite of the first critique - which happened to be a 2 TU. If the TD critique was written first, would you have marked the 2TU critique unhelpful as it would've been the total opposite of what the first critic saw?

I think I would have still found it unhelpful partly because of the way it was worded. Also, when I get a really negative critique I go look at that person's other critiques, and he didn't have anything nice to say about anybody!

And as dudephil noted, his voting record speaks for itself.

Leaves me wondering how you disembowel a lung?

Ignoring those things is the best way to make them stop. Creating a ruckus (i.e. forum post) specifically about them gives them the attention they crave.

Yes, I speak from experience. ;-)

because i can......

>looks sheepishly around<

i mean....

no but really take everything as grain of salt. sometime ppl. can be way out of line sometimes they are just not good at judging and reitterating in the best light possible.
sometime ppl. are just down right childish.

eigther way, its only a comment and if you don't like it ignor it. or if it is really unexceptable report it using that little report post or comment thingy.

and remember that its just what they saw or thought they saw and they are enitiled to view things as they will and they are the ones that have to live with that not you.

_bran(besides what i sad wasn't that bad it is crap, uh, er fine art....?)do_

There are two kind of threads. One like this and the other one says make comments mandatory. If no comments then some people unhappy on the other hand comments can make people unhappy too. What gives?

Boy, he sure has quite an attitude, that comment was no accident that happened to come out sounding harsher than it was intended to be.

I very much believe in giving the benefit of the doubt - it is so easy to misinterpret typed words - but in this case.... whoa!

I'm with ya on that one. I'd really rather see a DPC committee comment on, and judge the entries.

If you want to discuss rudeness in general, that's fine, but let's not turn this into a thread of personal attacks against and commentary on one user, please.

I work in a position where we are not allowed to state anything negatively. Yes, we may criticize, but it must be stated positively and constructively. People do, afterall, have feelings (and a photo is a reflection of the self). I have recommended this site to many photographers, but I do tell them to develop a thick skin because like it or not, sooner or later, someone lacking in appropriate writing skills (social skills, tact, whatever you want to call it) is going to cut to the bone!!!

Here is my take on comments. Comments are nothing but personal opinion from someone who looked your picture. It's upto the individual if she/he wants to buy that.

karmat, I totally understand the gist of your post and do agree, somewhat, with most of it. However, the part above strikes me a bit funny. Is this a bit tongue in cheek or are you actually comparing the two as equal?

It is indeed a bit tongue in cheek. I was just trying to point out that we often get upset at "rude" comments, but we really like the gratutious ones.

You're right. I understand that what I might consider rude someone else might consider helpful. Sure, most people love to hear the praises of their work and I am definitely one of them. Me being an extreme moron and complete amateur (picked my first DSLR up 6-7 months ago), if someone doesn't like what I've done I certainly appreciate a critique and some advice on what I should do differently. However, if someone says, "If there was a 0 button I'd hit it", I can't say that I'd consider that a valuable comment and would probably assume that the person is just being rude. It just seems to me that if an individual can take ten seconds to tell me "your shot sucks", maybe they could take another ten seconds to help me improve on it. Of sourse this is only my opinion and we know what opinions are similar to and can smell like :)

Skip,

I'm not sure anyone is advocating "sugar coating the truth" here; a comment like "if there was a 0 then this picture would deserve it" doesn't even remotely pass as a "truth" IMO. It's just plain an arrogant and rude way of making the point that the commenter thinks the image stinks.

It's like the difference between saying to someone you don't agree with "You're full of sh*t, you retard!" vs "I totally disagree with what you're saying, sir."

In a place like this I don't think comments of that type are even remotely excusable, sorry...

So true. Another thing is is that this kid who is making this comment about it being a 'zero rating' is only 14. Why is a 14 year old kid using this site when there are so many nude photos to view? Maybe thats another thread.

I got a "Yuck - 0" comment, and you know what? you have to let it run off you, like water off a duck. I just gave it the finger and laughed :)

This is my favourite comment of his;

"It would be cooler if there were a clown smoking a cigar in the front seat."

P.S. I think he's Joey's cousin. Well, he claims to be anyway! :)

This is definitively rude because the author is not taking into consideration the feelings of the person who took the picture...there is no 0, so even mentioning it is just plain nasty to boot...
