You are confusing MP with MB.
MP - Mega Pixel
MB - Mega Byte
Your image needs to be from a camera that produces images 6 MegaPixel or over.
I hope that helps. |

Helps load! Glad I apologized for my lameness in advance. :)
I guess this is what confused me (From their FAQ):
I shoot digital. What size should my original files be?
Original digital files should be AT LEAST 6 megapixels to be worthwhile. Dimensions must be AT LEAST 3000 pixels on the longest side. The bigger, the better. Anything less than 6 megapixels would be too small for print usage. All digital images should be taken at the highest quality level possible - RAW format is better than JPEG format.
My images are more than 6 megabytes but the dimensions are less than 3000 pixels on the longest side. Why can't this be used?
The pixel dimensions are really the most important factor as they define how large an image can be printed. We require that images need to be usable at full page for a magazine cover at 300 dpi (300mm by 210mm or 12 by 8 inches). 3000 by 2000 pixels is our minimum (this gives 250 by 160mm or 10 by 7 inches at 300 dpi - barely acceptable for a full page).
The whole 6 megapixels / 6 megabyte thing. :) So I'm assuming that as long as my images are at or above 3000 pixels on the longest side and at 300dpi than I should be ok?
Thanks again!

If you market your images through one of the micropayment sites (examples are: istockphoto, canstockphoto, photograb, shutterstock) then we can not represent your work on Photographers Direct :(

Originally posted by jenesis: Hey Guys, I just registered with Photographers Direct yesterday and have been reading up on their file size requirements. I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question but I'm a bit confused on how to get my photos to stay above 6.0mp. When I shoot raw my photos usually come to 6mp, sometimes right below like at 5.8 or 5.4mp. I usually don't shoot RAW but at the largest fine file size. This does not give me 6mp, more like 4mp.
Here's my thing, I use Canon digital camera File Viewer Utility to process my RAW files and convert them to jpeg files so that I can work on them in PS 7 (can't work on RAW files in 7) I save them at the highest level but that still only leaves me at around 4mp after converting unless I convert them to TIFF which makes them around 18mp.
Am I doing something wrong? The size of my photos are about the 3000 pixel size limit they suggest your photos be at but I'm having a hard time getting them to stay at or around 6mp. Should I save them as TIFF files work on them in PS, then convert them to jpeg? Will this give me the file size I need?
Again, I don't usually shoot RAW so I'm still not real familiar with the best way to convert them to jpeg without reducing the file size too much. Do you find that 6MP is required for the sales you've made? or is having the file at 300dpi with the required pixel requirements good enough?
Any help or suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for putting up with my long-winded lameness. ;-) |
First, you should be converting from RAW to TIFF, not JPG; this will give you an uncompressed working original.
Second, 6MP (megapixels) means there are 6 million pixels in the image. Regardless of how many MB (megabytes) the final image is, it still contains 6 million pixels. If you click on your image in the Photoshop file finder window, it will shot you in the details the actual pixel dimensions; if they are larger than 3000x2000 (which they will be on a 300D uncropped image) you have exceeded 6Mp in size.
They sepcifically ask you not to use JPEG; I'd assume delivery of a TIFF file after PP would work for them.

Thank you Robert. That helps me a lot. I hadn't noticed that they do not want jpegs, I'll have to read further before I submit any photos to them. I guess I'll be switching over to RAW from now on. Looks like I'm gonna have to start practicing RAW processing and conversions. :)

I have submitted nothing but .jpegs, and have had all my submissions excepted. The majority have a rating of 7 or 8 - with a few being at a 6. I think 9 is their highest rating.

How long does it take them to grade an image? I put some up on Friday and they're still not rated. :( Don't they know what an impatient person I am?? :-)

I figure it's necessary to convert to the highest possible quality/resolution so I go for 16bit always

Hello !
Your photos are excellent , I'm sure that as soon as you'll send them more you'll appear in the wow gallery.
I have no subscription and half of my photos have been rated 8 or 9.
Hope this could help ,

I was just looking at their site, and they say they can't represent photographers who market their pictures through the microsites. I understand their logic, but when you're trying to make a living, there ain't no such thing as pride.
I feel like telling them, if I make some money through their site, I'll be happy to take my stuff down from the stock sites.

Hi,
I have been accepted to Photographers Direct. I can't find answers to some questions.
Do they require release forms? How do you deliver pictures to the buyer, by email?
Anyone know?
Thanks in advance |

I registered for this site about 6 months ago and still haven't received an e-mail verification from them. I e-mail them asking what the deal is and get no response.

I wonder if your junk filter isn't pulling it or something. I got an immediate response when I signed up, asking me to submit whatever proof it was (which I never actually did).

I also received an email from them right away and I didn't send in my intial pictures for like 3 weeks.
You can just email them and tell them you didn't get it and they will send it to you again

Any unauthorized e-mail goes into a spam folder which I check everyday also. I tested to see if I get mail from them by requesting my password and they sent it to me. When I try to log in on the website it still says my account hasn't been validated.

You got something goofy going on then because it works just fine for me. But the email address is chrisbarton@postmaster.co.uk if you want to try that. |

I hope I can clear a few things up. I have been with PD for a while now.
Upload your images as small jpegs (I think their maximum file size is 200k). I upload at 640px longest side as I find this a suitable on-screen viewing size. Then save at whichever jpeg level brings the file size below 200k.
I Keep my originals (8bit Tiffs converted from 16 bit RAW) in the same file as my small jpegs so that when I get a request and sale I can find adn send the images out immediately.
PD usually rates your images within 48 hours (I thiink they state this). But as with most companies, they don't work as swiftly on holidays or weekends. Sometimes it takes longer but no worries, you can attach an urated image to an image request (in fact, that pushes the image to the top of the queue to be rated). PD is pretty good at customer/client service.
Boycott micro stock, its like discount prostitution. Photographers Direct is the way to go; you get 80%, you decide on the terms, and you get all the benefits of a stock agency without the harsh requirements/screening process.

I have been just accepted to PD and I uploaded some pictures. I uploaded one for a request. The deadline is today. I uploaded the picture last night and it was rated this morning. When do the customers make a decision on purchasing the picture before the deadline or after? Do you get a notice by email or do you need to check somewhere in your account?
Also, are they harsh on their rating? |

I've been with PD for a little over a month now, I don't think I ever got an email saying I was accepted, I just kept going back to see if I could log in. I started out by uploading about 5 images to see how they were rated, I've also uploaded to about 3 requests so far with no success so I can't answer on how long it takes them to make a decision. I've also noticed that it usually takes them a few days to rate images. Images attached to requests are rated much quicker than just regular images you upload to your home page.
I'm a little dissapointed but I haven't been there too long so I'm giving it a chance. Unfortunately for me, it seems like the majority of the requests are for overseas locations or people to which I have none. Most of my images (and I only have about 15) are rated 7 with a few 8's and 9's.
