Need to be a bit more specific

First, you need to be more specific. What's the problem?
Also, try the NeatImage/Mac forum.

If you want NeatImage, I would recommend downloading NeatImage.

I can see that this one is going no where fast, so I am going to temporarily highjack it. When should I be using neat image, at the beginning of the work flow or the end? Thanks for any help someone can share. Sorry to highjack.

i think that would depend on if you want to use it to get an effect from it, or if you just want to remove the noise, which do you want to do?

I would remove noise earlier on

Thanks ellamay, that's what I want to do is remove noise. So I will do neat image before I head down the path of all the adjustment layers. Thanks for the help!

Agcowle,

It doesn't seem to me that people are being very helpful to you. I think you are asking what programs are available to do noise reduction on the Mac.

Neat Image (tm) is one of the programs that is available. I know there are others but I know nothing about them. Neat Image seems to be the favorite here on DPC, so I've considered getting it. I can tell you that the web site is //www.neatimage.com/. There is a free version you can download to try it out. A new version came out about a month ago. They say "Neat Image v4.0 /Mac is more automated and user-friendly."

I was about to get Neat Image a while ago but then I saw a thread here on DPC in which people proudly displayed their winning pictures on which they had used Neat Image. It turned out that I had given most of them a 5 or below in the voting. They seemed unpleasantly fake to me. I've decided not to get it for now, but I still might get it for noise reduction if I run into a problem with noise in specific images.

I hope this is helpful.

Noise Ninja gives a much more natural look than Neatimage IMHO...

I have just used both, and I totally agree with this. Neat Image leaves more of a plastic look to the end photo.

Thank you, both doctornick and ifordhere. I've looked at the web site for Noise Ninja and I think it is what I want.

I seem to recall that Noise Ninja has a trial download, like Neat Image does. But they don't mention what features aren't in the free version - anyone know?

I believe it was Noise Ninja whose trial download I checked out. It places a grid across the final picture, so that it really IS only so you can try it but not actually USE it.

I ended up with Noiseware Community Edition, which is shareware. Of course it doesn't have the flexibility of the various paid applications but it's better than nothing. :)

Noiseware

(Keep in mind, I know NOTHING about post-processing...)

I have Neat Image installed here. I got it originally when I was using the Coolpic 5700, which was relatively noisy, and I used it on every shot basically. Since I got the 20D, I rarely use Neat Image. On the few occasions when I use ISO 1600 I have Neat Imaged, but other than that I have seen no need for it, really.

EXCEPT: sometimes my more extreme post-processing work actually introduces noise in certain channels/areas of the image, most noticeably when trying to bring drama out of skies. The blue/cyan channels are very susceptible to clumping when contrast is pushed.

I am following such discussion as I can find about Noise Ninja with some interest, wondering if it is a better solution or not. Today I have looked at the NN site for the first time, and I noticed that it says "supported file types" are JPG and TIFF. No mention of PSD files. Can anyone confirm that NN does NOT work on PS native files (psd)? If so, that means it would basically be useless to me except for generalized noise reduction after RAW conversion but before any photoshop work, since I always work with PSD files.

Reason I ask; NN mentions a localized "brush" you can use, and I like the sound of that.

R.

The plugin for Noise Ninja will work on the PSD files. I just tried it by opening a TIFF file, then saving it as a PSD file, then using the Noise Ninja plugin. Works fine.

The only app I've used it NI and use it to remove noise in the bg rather than smooth skin etc as many peeps do. I paid my 10 bucks (or whatever it is) and can NI selective areas rather than the entire image.

I have put together a rough comparison photo to show a possible difference between Neat Image and Noise Ninja. I tried with each to get the photo as nice looking as possible, here are the results.

I must say that personally, I prefer the noise ninja one. The background looks the same in both, but the foreground items are sharper, more natural.

Noise Ninja is a plugin to Photoshop. I've done layer processing with Noise Ninja - and then faded the layer to get the optimum look (reduced noise, best sharpening). By the way Noise Ninja can also be used to sharpen the image as you remove the noise.

That's interesting how both of them treat skin detail as noise and smooth it out.

Like any tool, it depends on how you use it.
I find NI tends to soften an image.

The free version is fine for DPC, but it has no control over the compression of the image. If you pay for a version then you ahve lots more control available to you, including batching of images (handy if you shoot an event at a high ISO and need to de-noise 50 or 100 images). You can get NI with or without the plug in for PS.

This was run throght Neat Image and got a 5.7

You don't have to overdo it.
