I just got the opportunity to do and advertising campaign shoot for a local ski shop.... will be taking a snow cat up on the mountain to shoot snowboarders, and also going out and shooting wakeboarders.... any advice and lens suggestions for such shooting would be greatly appreciated!!
I currently have:
Canon EF 35-135mm f/4-5.6 USM
Tamron AF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD for Canon
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Am thinkig something with IS...

| Polarizer and an adapter ring so it could fit on whichever lens. Polarizer, I would think, would be big on a sunny day. You'll lose some speed, but the snow will be so friggin bright it won't matter. |

A fisheye perspective is very popular with skateboarders, and if you can get VERY close to the snowboarders, like 2-4 feet, it would work there too. An alteernative is to use telephoto, and isolate the subject. It might be best to review concepts with the shop owners to see what they prefer.
For wakeboarding, different story. You're either gonna be shooting from a chase boat, or from the ski boat itself, and there will probably be very significant bouncing around. A telephoto will be a necessity. I've used the 70-200 IS for this, and it's about the right range, and the IS comes in VERY handy on the boat.

Budget?
Fisheye is great for Snowboarding shots.
For wakeboarding, I assume you'll be in the boat pulling the Wakeboarder, then IS is a must, the 70-200 f/2.8L IS is the perfect focal length and Lens for this.
For both, remember to dial in a +1 Exposure compensation at least, watch your histogram. |
