I'm going to order the 30d this week sometime but I have to figure out what lenses I want first. I want something similar to the focal length of the kit lens but of a higher quality. And I need a telephoto. 70-200 or 70-300mm. What would you choose? FWI I don't have much money for these lenses. So they'd have to be a fairly good priced pair or lenses. Thanks.

the best value for a long lens is the sigma 70-300 4-5.6 APO. Must be the APO version, about $180. The next step up would be the canon 70-200 f4 (500ish) or sigma 70-200 2.8 (800 ish).

As for kit lens alterntatives...
sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5
tamron 28-75 2.8 (not wide enough IMO) $350
tamron SP24-135 (barely wide enogh, but a super sharp lens and 135mm is great for walkaround duty) $400
sigma 18-50 2.8 (a bit soft below f3.5 though) but a better deal than
the canon 17-40 f4 (the sigma is as sharp and you get more range for less cost and that extra stop when you need it) sigma $500
canon 17-85 IS - but I think the tamron 24-135 is a better choice (more range, just as fast, $200 cheaper) canon $585

Tamron is coming out with a new lens in late may - 17-50 or 18-50 2.8 SP - should be excellent.

Sigma makes a decent kit with a 28-90 and a 70-300 for $219 from Ritz. Not the best quality, but it'll meet the need. They both do an okay macro job too.

70-200mm f/4.0L
17-40mm f/4.0L
50mm f/1.8

That setup right there will cover pretty much all of your needs and you won't have to worry about upgrading later on. If you can't afford them all now, just pick up one for now and wait.

The 30D is a great camera. Get the most out of it, don't buy so-so quality glass. Your imaging system is only as good as it's worst component.
You don't need to go ultra-expensive, but avoid slow, soft consumer zooms. Prof_Fate suggested the Sigma 18-50/2.8, and that seems to me to be a very good choice for a "kit lens replacement." For the telezoom, take the Canon 70-200/4 and don't look back. It's both a stunning performer and a great value. I'd also suggest considering a third lens, the Canon 50/1.8. You should have a fast prime, and this very inexpensive (less than $100USD) lens is a great bargain.

I'm guessing unless you want to spent more than $500 on a lens, you are not going to get more bang for your buck than with the kit lens. I'm not familiar with the 30D kit, but the lens on the 300D was quite capable for a cheap lens. No, it's not L-glass, but it only cost you about $100 and for that it was excellent.

I'd recommend the kit or spending some serious money on a lens.

Just as a contrasting opinion, I would buy the 10-22mm EF-S lens in favor of the 17-40mm - that option was not available to me when I initially bought the 20d. I really miss being able to shoot a very wide angle, and the 17mm is only so-so with the 1.6 crop (16mm vs 27mm is a pretty big difference).

If you are at all into landscapes or travel photography I think a 10-22mm is a must have. I am still on the fence about getting that lens or trading in the 20d to offset some of the cost for a 5D to get to that wider FOV.

I realize that leaves a pretty big gap between 22mm and 70mm but I find myself at either end a lot more than in the middle. And there are lots of good 24-135 choices out there that won't break the bank if that is a concern. Just some more thoughts.

I'd get a 20D used and put that money saved towards good glass. On a budget? Tamron 28-75 would be nice, Canon 70-200 4L is also good.

Depends on what you like to shoot! Ditto to the others on the 70-200 f4L, no contest for an all-around zoom that does lovely portraits too. And with the high ISO performance of the 30D it's a perfect mate.

A friend bought the Canon 17-85 (I think, new to their line within the last few months) and is very happy with that as his short lens. Solid build, great optics.

The 50 1.8 II "crack lens" (once you try Canon glass, you'll never go back to 3rd party) for less than $100.
