I have always been a little disappointed with the sharpness of my Nikon 18-70mm kit lens, but have become used to it and the amount of USM required in PS.
This weekend I was taking some macro pics with my Nikon 60mm f2.8 in a vineyard when I saw a couple of young boys approaching and decided to try a few portraits. Usually I would change to my kit lens for this, but this time I did not and used the macro lens.
I was very impressed with the sharpness of the pics and I am now convinced that it is worth while to get good glass if you expect to get good results.
I've included one of the pics - this is a 100% crop straight from the camera with NO post-processing.

yes there is a reason those expensive lenses get made, it's not just to look cool ;)

I started my DSLR era with the 300D and sigma 18-50 DC and 55-200DC, I never liked the results, I uses to have a 3Mpixels p&s and it gave much better results.

when I upgraded to 20D I bought some L glasses to go with it and the change was dramatic, finally I saw some quality in my images... even though my photography skills didn't improove by the upgrade ;)
