Hi All,

Within the next couple of months, I'm planning on buying a 30D (YAY! :) Unfortunately, it's not something I can do right now. But, the lens I'd like to get for it (the Tamron 28-75/2.8) has a $30 rebate available for it right now through the end of April. So I'm planning on buying the lens now to get the rebate. (I figure I can test it out on my Canon Elan II, so at least I'll know it works.)

Anyway, buydig.com has the Tammy for a really good price - comes to $309 after the rebate. However, they don't offer the Mack Warranty. So this leads me to have two questions:

1) Is it really worth it to buy an extended warranty on a lens for this price? While it's not cheap, it's not an L-series, either.

2) If I decide to get the warranty, can I buy it from a different place from where I purchased the lens? In other words, can I get BuyDig's great deal on the lens, and then go to B&H and pick up the warranty for it?

Thanks, everyone.

gentle *bump* for the evening crowd, as I'm still wondering about this.

Thanks,

Hi Liz

I'm not sure of the answer to your question but I've often wondered the same things, so hopefully someone will wander along who knows...

You can buy the Mack warranty from a different retailer than the one from which you are purchasing your equipment. I bought a camcorder from Willoughby's a couple of years back but I bought the Mack warranty from B&H. Good luck with the new gear!

Great! Thanks, Brad.

I think it's time for me to do a little shopping. :)

My opinion would be that it is not worth it. If there is anything wrong with the lens when it's new the Tamron warranty should cover it. Use it enough so that you are sure it is a good copy before that runs out. If it goes that long with no problems it will probably be ok for as long as you want to use it. But don't drop it!

Yes, you can. But you must do so within 30 days.

If you use the right credit card to buy the lens, etc, they will double the warrantee up to a year (or so they claim--I've never tried to collect on it.)

So a 3 year extended warantee may really only give you one year (AFIK, they count from the day you get the lens)

But if you're getting the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, it should have a 6 year warrantee per

I don't know of an extended warrantee that goes over seven years, so if you buy the Tamron with a credit card, you may get 6 years coverage from Tamron and one year from your CC company (you'd have to check with them, and then remember to excercise the warrantee later) and the extended warrantee will be redundant.
