What do you guys charge for doing senior portraits? Is there a sitting fee? What do you charge for packages?

It varies greatly.
some of it is regional (what do seniors do there? drape shots, cap and gown shots, year book shots (are there rules on this?))

google for local photogs and see what their websites say.

The only local site I found with prices on it said, "15.00 per outfit," and allowed for upto five changes.

I'm being overrun by people who somehow think I'm going to do FREE senior portraits for them. Though, a fair number think a $15 sitting fee, and a basic package (1 8x10, 2 5x7, 1 wallet sheet) for $25 isn't too unreasonable. Other people just get mad.

I have a $30 sitting fee, and my smallest package is 1 8x10, 2 5x7 and 8 wallets for $35 +$5 shipping. That's for one pose, and then I have more packages with more poses offered. My individual photo sizes are 4/wallets $5, 8x10 $12, 5x7 $8. I don't want to rip people off and I do want their business so I feel my prices are within reason, and word is starting to get out. I use mpix.com for my processing.

I did not charge a sitting fee this year. I only had one kid that I got burned on...and that was his moms fault. She got mad because I took some pictures of some other kids at the same spot I took hers. She said she thought she had something special. Keep in mind I just started doing seniors this year and am trying to grow my business.
If I did not have the online gallery viewing...she would never have known. I tried to reason with her but it did no good. I finally got aggrevated with her enough to ask her if she was gonna buy one of the other senior kids pictures and hang it on the wall next to her sons.

I spent 4 hours with them taking pictures on 2 separate occasions...plus all the time working up some pictures. She ended up buying about 50 dollars worth of skateboarding action shots that I did on one of the sessions. I wanted to tell her to go ---- herself. Dang I was mad.

She was the only one who got to me.

The other 11 have all been great and spent anywhere from 200-400. Which is still cheap around here, especially for the amount of pictures they get.

Next year 100 minimum upfront and 50 of it will go towards pictures.

alixmiles--You should have asked her if she thinks every time she sees the doctor or the dentist if she is their ONLY patient that day?? If she calls a plumber or electrician is her house the ONLY one they work on that day?? I'm new to photography for profit, but I've run my own DJ business for over 11 years. Sometimes it helps to put things in perspective with a completely different industry. Just my $.02.

I agree pixl....Most of the parents and kids realize what a bargain they are getting.

I raised my prices a little bit...and I also will tack on 25-75 dollars extra for my time. It depends on how demanding they are. I like giving them quality....but without any free time since october...they will need to make it worth my time.

No packages ragamuffin. Just individual picture charges. look at my site.lawsonimages.com
